Retaining C1 after having a implanted cardiac defibrillator device fitted

Has anyone on the forum managed to retain there C1 entitlement after having a ICD fitted ?
I had one fitted five months ago so I can apply for my licence in just over a months time ( banned for medical reasons for six months )
I am just coming up to my 69th birthday.
I would love to hear from anyone in the same situation.

I am afraid it does not look good for holding on to your C1. You need to notify the DVLA, this is a link to the DVLA website.

Depends very much on what the device is implanted for.
I have had a pacemaker for atrial fibrillation for ten years and retained C1.
If it is for ventricular problems there may be a very different view. Probably this forum is not the best place for a reliable answer.

Pacemakers are treated differently. I don’t see any harm in discussing it on this forum but I agree you have to look elsewhere for more information. Hence my link to the DVLA website where I read this.

Thanks for your link to Dvla website, I have a note in my Dvla application form to that effect,
As I have an ICD implanted I therefore cannot meet the higher medical standards and are not eligible to apply for C1/D1 entitlement.
Just wanted to find out if anyone else had been through this process.

A reasonable enquiry and it would be interesting to hear from other ICD drivers. It might also be worth checking with the DVLA whether the “grandfather rights” are treated any differently from other Group 2 licenses, unlikely but ?

I have spoken to DVLA a couple of months ago and a very nice gentleman advised me that he couldn't see any reason why I should not get my C1 back as long as I met the medical criteria ( which I probably don't , who knows ? )

I had to do a treadmill test after my heart attack and stent. I hope they don’t ask me to do another one when I renew at the end of the year.
 
I would think that once you have cleared the 6 months, your C1 would be valid up to your 70th birthday and that's when your dvla issues will start.

I lost my C1 at 70 with a fitted ICD
DVLA were worse than useless at explaining the reasoning. I don't have the time to explain all that was involved.
Good luck in trying to keep your C1.

I think the difference is that at 70 your “grandfather rites” expire and from then on your C1 is subject to the full Group 2 health regulations. However even before that it seems the DVLA can choose to impose license restrictions on any type of license for the illnesses you have to notify them about.
 
Problem is that I am unable to downplate my Carthago tourer 144 from 3850 to 3500 as it would be unusable, wife will just have to carry on driving.

It can be done if you try hard. We did.
You have to very ruthless in what you do
not need . Remove, the front mattress, all steps and carpets etc, etc. Check your weight at a local quarry who will have a weight bridge. Good luck.

An acquaintance had one of these devices fitted.
He was told his driving days are over, he won't get a licence again.
 
cant apply for licence until six months has expired as Cardiologist has to fill in part of the form.
not removing front mattress as I sleep on it, not sleeping in the back as the wife snores like a trooper.

After heart attack and stent it is only 6 weeks for C1 but it still needs cardiologist to give the all clear. It actually said it could be a GP but as my GP explained, the Group 2 health assessment includes a treadmill test and they don’t have this equipment in a GP surgery. Fortunately the DVLA asked for the treadmill test as part of their assessment of my VOCH1 notification so I didn’t have to pay. In all it was about 3 months after my heart attack before I could drive our motorhome again. I was given the ok at the treadmill test, the DVLA confirmed no restrictions a few weeks later but it was the cardiologist’s clearance that mattered because my license had not been withdrawn.

An ICD seems to be whole lot more complicated, hope you get it sorted KUSKUS .

Unless things have improved dramatically in the last year the chances of DVLA contacting you or making a decision at the six month point is highly unlikely. the decision on my licence after an ICD being fitted took ten months!!
I just wanted to drive a small M/h no need for a C1.

My C1 renewal was refused due to my left ventricular valve (?) being only 35% efficient, it needs to be 40% for C1 licence.

What was the decision on your C1 licence, did you get it with an ICD fitted ?
 
My comment was about the time it takes to get a decision on anything, I had no need for a C1 but it still took 10 months to get a driving licence back let alone a C1 which I have no need for.
 
I am a couple of weeks off the six months and are going to speak to my cardiologist regarding my consdec reply form, as you say I can't see anything happening soon and have little to no hope of getting my C1 licence back.
