I have managed to switch on my water heater with a dry cylinder and not surprisingly the heater has tripped out.

power off/on did not work so now need to do a manual reset - only problem is I have no idea where it is - Poss underfloor but where.

the MV shows a picture of the unit but not where it is located….

help please or it is cold showers…..

Thanks Jonno,

that was the instruction for all the faults apart from no 2 - and I did try that on the off chanc. My manual said if that did not work try the reset button -( the good thing is that I now know I have got the underfloor combined version and where it is)

Sadly the warning sign disappeared but came back after 5 seconds.

Just tried it again and same result.

As you said the Whale manual says you can reset from the panel but then one of the pictures shows red and white reset buttons for water and space heating…..

wIll put it up on a ramp and try to find the buttons…

Graham

Whale don't make a combined system although it has a duo control panel, it's a separate underfloor water heater & a separate underfloor blown air heater. Only motorhomes fitted with the iVan Intelligent Control Panel have reset buttons on the actual unit, at 3 years old your 120 won't have this system even as an option as the iVan system is quite recent. These reset buttons are fitted internally next to the yellow drain valve.

Don't put it on a ramp as there's nothing to see under there, certainly no resets.

The water boiler is under the cooker, the yellow lever can be seen in the top right corner of the base cupboard with the dropdown front. Confirm that the yellow lever is in the up position... pointing to the vans sidewall. It's hidden away there as the only thing an owner will ever do with a none iVan set up is switch the drain valve. Everything else requires a Whale tech and every reset is done on the duo control panel.

full water tank... Yes.

Drain valve closed... Yes.

230v RCD's on... Yes.

Gas on... Yes.

It can take multiple resets to clear a lock out as it can take a bit of time for the exchanger plates to really cool off. if it's still just the exclamation mark & two red bars I'd just keep trying. Dry heating doesn't do any real damage as the system shuts down very, very rapidly.

Thanks for that - when i tried the reset today the gas was off - so will try again this evening with everything switched on and everything crossed......

Hi Jonno,

Drat. Tried last night and again today - no joy

water tank full
power on
gas on
RCD switched off and on

Space heater activated on gas and fired up OK

Then tried the water reset - was able to move the display to gas but the red warning light returned and the heater returned to 'OFF"

Is it time for a specialist ?

When the red warning light came on and you pressed the water button how many bars lit up on the gauge below? If it's 2 it's still the overheat lockout which means there's no water in it, I take it you turned all your hot taps on to purge any air in the system an the water flowed freely?

You only need to ring their support line if 5 bars light up.

Hi Jonno,

Thanks for your perseverence but i ended up contacting Whale and In fact my system does have a reset button and these are the instructions from Whale....

Now all working and wife very happy !

To clear the water heater lockout:

Turn the water heater off at the panel

Turn the master switch off then on

Turn the water heater on at the setting it locked out on gas/electric

Press the red reset button twice at the water heater

Press the tap and the + button together on the panel

The reset button will be behind the braided hose.

If a motorhome and lockout does not clear.

Follow the steps in previous email, to step 2 then:

Take the fuse out at the fuse box for the space heater/boiler and leave out for 10 minutes

Replace fuse

Follow from step 3

Hopefully this clears the lockout.

Aha! Thanks Graham. The newer expanse boilers don't have resets on them. Must have been a bit of a palaver getting to the one in your van if it's under the oven?

Certainly one to note for future reference, Glad you're all sorted.

Iain.
