I followed the instructions to update my Garmin Avtex but it has failed.
Is there a way to reset the device as it will not start just shows a blank screen with the occasional horizontal lines?

Thanks for your reply.
I did spend a lot of time on the Garmin website but nowhere can I find a frozen screen from switch on help.
The page you point to is , I believe, a soft reset assuming the device can start up.
Unfortunately I am still at a loss as how to restart the Garmin Avtex from. "no start screen".
If you can help further it would be most appreciated.

I know that some of the Garmin devices you can do a hard reset by plugging the power lead into the power socket, then whilst holding the power button down on the device plug the power cable into the back of the device and keep holding the button down for at least another 5 seconds. Not sure if that works on all of them but had to do that a couple of times on my nuvi.

I have the same unit, just downloaded the manual and the only reference I can see that may help you is
"Restarting the Device You can restart your device if it stops functioning. Hold the power key for 12 seconds."
The troubleshooting guide doesn't specifically mention your problem though.

Did the system 'fall over' during the map update and offer you the chance to Cancel the update? Mine failed 3 times during the update about 10 days ago, and when I selected 'Cancel', there was a screen message saying that some files had changed and that I may not be able to start the device if I proceeded with the 'Cancel' option! So I cancelled the cancellation request and let it stumble through to failures 2 & 3 during the update, and it got to the 'Finish Line' ... eventually.

Strangely, I had bought a Garmin Camper 780 about a week earlier [the Avtex Garmin was supplied by the Dealer the following week as the answer to the failed SD Card in the Pioneer built in Satnav!] and that update went seamlessly, albeit at the usual snail's pace of download. But the Avtex rebadged version was very flaky. Utterly bizarre.

Thanks I'll give this a try when I find my way home.

I'm not sure, but, if it loaded what it was supposed to do first, i.e. system files, then waited for me to restart the device, it would have timed out and then shut down. However, if it's this or a dodgy upload I don't know as it won't start up.
So I'm looking for a factory reset/ cold startup and hoping someone can direct me.

Iff you call Avtex on 02920847670 and speak to the technical dept they should be able to help you.
