they are more common here than they were, but mostly northern counties and Scotland

I grew up on a farm in the UK - I don't think until I moved to Germany did I ever see a red in the wild.

Lovely, thanks for sharing, the reds are so much nicer than the grey thugs that ransack out bird feeders.
I don't think I've ever seen one despite going in search of where they're meant to be.
I've always assumed this is because they're timid ?

.... and indeed In the SW of France staying on a campsite there were red squirrels and a baby fell out of the drey in one tree and a daft camper felt sorry for it so instead of leaving it exactly where it was she decided to scoop it up and take it to reception - so the owner and his wife had landed up having to hand feed it day and night for a couple of months. He was currently trying to stop the kids on site playing with him and was no longer feeding him and attempting to encourage him back to the outdoors where he belonged. We kept well away until one day near or moho we took our morning coffee and chairs under the shade of a nearby tree and watched him scampering through the branches above us with great pleasure. Took our eyes off him and he jumped down onto the frame of Pete's chair, onto his left shoulder, ran down his arm to his wrist, front paws onto rim of mug, and started helping himself to coffee! Little bugger. I took the mug, Pete got up and put 'Eddy' (the kids had name him that) back onto the tree trunk and he scampered back up the trunk and along a branch when the little sod 'What's got a hazelnut in every bite?' - yes, indeed, a pellet of squirrel shit on my arm from high above! Blooming hard and ruddy well HURT!

And the Isle of Wight and Brownsea Island in Dorset . . . . There would be more if it wasn't for the plague that is the grey squirrel.
