Hi everyone - I hope you are all well. We are relatively new to the whole world of MH life. We want to go to Spain for the first time ever (San Sebastian would be our preference) for 3 nights from 8th to 11th July. We live in centre west France. When we travel in our MH in France we always use a site with EHU and water facilities etc as we have never gone off grid, so to speak. We do have the ability to go off grid however.

Do any of you guys have any recommendations for either serviced sites or none serviced sites in that vicinity?

Thanks in advance folks. Paul & Kate

We love San Sebastian and stayed at Camping Bungalows Igueldo, a couple of miles out of town up a steep hill, there were regular buses and a stop near the campsite, it’s quite a few years since we were there but we loved it. Pitches were very tight but we coped at 9.2m I don’t think your supposed to drive through the city to it but the other road was closed when we went. I would see what site info is available, there are pictures on Google maps. You could hire a locker on the beach to have a swim. The bars are amazing.

2nd Camping Igueldo, the mahoooosive hill is nothing when your on the very regular bus and I certainly would not let the hill put me off, and from memory (Sept 2018) was €1.40 one way.
Lovely town to visit and some fantastic eateries and bars, I may have imagined this but seem to think San Seb has been awarded the foody capital of Spain

Envious so enjoy your trip

Al 👍👍

Many thanks for the prompt replies. Unfortunately this site cannot be booked in advance. We are heart scared of driving down there only to find we cannot get a site and have nowhere to stay (hence why we always booked paid and serviced site.

We stayed at the Aire near the university. Services but no EHU. A short cycle ride to town and no very expensive
Thanks for this. At that time of the year do you think there is a chance we might not get a site on spec

We did a 2nd stop on this aire and tbh hated it, crammed in, I really mean rammed in, and infact we never left the moho as we didn’t really feel relaxed enough to do so.

Each to their own mind you but not our cup a tea

Al 😳

Didn't register the July bit and it's very popular so 3 nights is probably a too optimistic. If you can book a site that's going to be best.

We just parked and slept there and went into the city.

I think the aire is ok if you just use it as a sleeping place to see the lovely city, been there quite a few times. Its really convenient but not one you're going to sit out on. I really really don't understand why there isn't a better campsite than Igueldo? Its miles out of town up a difficult road with tight pitches and no views, how is it possible for a campsite on top of the mountain next to the coast in a pretty part of Spain to have no views?

We liked the Aire, have used it twice now. We were there mid October and it was packed - arrive before lunchtime as it’s full by 2pm. The second time was mid December, less busy then. Not been to Spain in the summer though, worried about the heat!! Great beach at San Sebastián and the Harbour at neighbouring Donostia. We found a lovely independent coffee shop at the nearby shopping precinct - and a vet there too, who wormed the dog for us really good value. (Alas the pet passport).
The pitches were all marked out and there was water and dump, but no EHU.
Generally if using Aires, the earlier the better to ensure a place, don’t leave it too late in the day!
As you are in France, you have free aires locally - have you tried “off grid” on one or two of your local ones to see how it goes? Then you are not too far away from “base” if you identify a problem that needs rectifying?
We doubled up from 1 to 2 x 100Ah batteries with solar panels and put in refillable gas before we went off grid, then went to Lithium with a 1200 watt inverter (enough to run a hairdryer and low wattage kettle) after our first 6 months and have just uprated our charging system. This has allowed us spend the past 3 weeks or so off grid on German Aires with no problem. Europe is so well set up for MoHo’s with their network of Aires right in the town centres, it’s almost a shame not to use them!
