As our van has an exterior fitting for a gas cooker I have decided that it would be terribly rude not to use it!
So I have been investigating various options but am as yet undecided....Grill? BBQ? Hot plate? One burner or two? Stand alone or table-top? It goes on and on!
What better place to ask for advice than here! What are your preferences guys (and gals) and why?
We just need to feed the two of us plus the dog, Boo, to clean up the scraps.
Our van is set up on 30Mbar. If I buy a 30Mbar rated grill do I still need a regulator?
Thanks for your learned advice

100% ignore everyone who says cadac. It’s a cult and they will steal your soul. If you don’t have a soul they will steal your shoes and anything you want to cook

Lol, we had a Weber prior to the Cadac (still is the home BBQ). The issue is simply it takes 3x the locker space and we're limited on that. Cadac = more room for other stuff in the van.

Never said the Cadac is the best BBQ we own, but it is the best choice for the motorhome.

Once we saw a Cadac carry bag and the (very small) size for the Safari 30 + all acccesories, we were converts to the cult.

In negatives the cadac cult also requires you to sacrifice to the cleaning gods as cleaning the thing after a cook out is annoying even with the soaking tub they now sell given the bloody grill plates don't fit in our motorhome sink, so it also required the soaking tub to be purchased.

We also seem to (as cult members) buy another Cadac item for the set every year.

Hi starquake & Jon Stewart - thanks for the advice on using the Cadac pizza stone, that's really helpful! Next time we use the Cadac, I'll make sure we're equipped with some coarse semolina, and get the pizza stone nice and hot!

Thanks again! 🍕
Glad to help.

Just one last thought. If you have an infrared thermometer, see if you can get the stone (top) to about 250C.

On our gas pizza oven we get the front (near the burner) to about 300+C, and the temp tails off to about ~170C at the opening. Centre must be about 250C.

Nothing ever sticks.

I know it's not a direct comparison, but might help.

*Photos of the pizza, please!

We have and love a Skotti. It’s not cheap but here’s why we chose it after trying nearly every BBQ available:

Can burn any of: gas (bottled or gas outlet), charcoal and wood.
It folds up really small like it’ll fit in a backpack if you need to
Versatile - smoker, lid, griddle plate, pizza stone, etc.

The only con I can think of is that it’s a bit small. It’s fine for two but if you have guests or eat a lot, there is an XL model.

Tried Cadac, unimpressed. Pig to clean.

Now got a Weber Q1000.

Brilliant BBQ, hotplate and a pretty good oven
But Weber charge the earth for accessories. You can get them for a third of the price off Amazon and Ebay

Swap out the cast iron grills for two stainless steel ones (about 30 quid Amazon)
Get either the full or half size hotplate
Fit a £10 thermometer in the lid (Weber charge about £100 extra for this)
The only thing that I have that is Weber, is the oven heat shields and oven bars.

My advice is to get one that is quick to set up and put away plus easy to clean.
Previously we used a cadac grill which a pain to set up and the hot plate a pain to clean.
Now trying a cadac pro 3 which seems easier but so far only used a few times. Don’t like to leave it out so set each time.
We do have an external bbq point but I am often find I’m envious of people that get a small Webber out of a locker with a little gas canister that are up and running straight away. I went for fancy instead of simple!

Cadac Grillo Chef, bought on a special for an absolute steal years ago now from Millets, mostly used with griddle plate or paella dish. We also have the pizza stone somewhere that we should dig out and use more often.

Hi Rog,

I'm considering a Skotti, based on the pros you mention, but rwo thi gs put me off, it looks a bit fiddly to assemble and I don't think it's possible to add charcoal/wood without disassembly. I'd be interested in your experience.

It’s a bit painful to assemble at first but once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s pretty easy. The cap (lid) is more fiddly but maybe that’s because we use it less.

To burn charcoal you assemble it without the burner and put a layer of gravel/sand in the bottom. So yes: more hassle but, the fact that you can do it at all sets it aside from all the competition.

One other advantage I forgot is that it’s all stainless steel so back at home everything except the burner goes through the dishwasher.

Rog NotJane why would you eat shoes? There is a difference between shoe leather and cow leather aka beef. Also if they are too large to fit, cut them up instead of getting another XL cooking thing. Think of the planet not consumerism.

Rodders1234 wot is this cleaning ritual you speak of? Cadac plate once a year in October in the dishwasher at home whilst the Mrs is out, same as alloy wheels off the MH

The latest version of the Cadac we use doesn't suffer from the stick on bits as the original CarriChef version.

We have a cadac 2 cook 2 go pro or summat like that, easy set up (suitcase type) 2 burners, with hot plate and griddle. Easy to clean, and easy to store, but the carry case is about as robust as a wet paper bag.

We have the Weber Go Anywhere gas BBQ

We like it because it’s rectangular so fits in our boot easier than the round ones!

I’ve got the hoses to connect it up to our external BBQ point and although my solution ends up with two regulators in the line (the vans regulator and the BBQ regulator), it works fine and gets hot quickly. This saves having to mess around with gas canisters that it’s primarily designed to work with.

Hope this helps in your decision making 🤔
likewise.. great bit of kit, but I use it with the gas canisters which last surprising long ..makes it portable for sitting at the beach or other locations away from the van ..

had a Cadac years ago and didn't like it.. a faff to clean and it never got hot enough to grill a steak..

the gas Webber does it all .. including heating a pizza, pies etc
