Rear steadies when a tow bar has been fitted - AL KO chassis

Hi Funsters

I have just had a tow bar fitted top on our 2006 Bessacarr E795 MH. To fit the tow bar they had to remove the fitted steadies, my question is there a replacement corner steady available on the market that anyone has fitted? To access the screw thread they would need to come out the side of the MH instead of the back as previously fitted.

Mine has spring loaded manual steadies in front of the rear wheels - they work very well.

We have a towbar & Alko chassis. I just bought an extra van jack from ebay & use that & the van jack, one either side. £25 / £30 & no instalation cost.

I only tend to use them when wind is over 50mph

ours are set back towards the rear wheels, no tow bar so assume it was to do with the Alko Chassis (spell check turned it into alcohol chassis which would be more appropriate)

Our MH moves a fair bit due to the length, especially when our teenage son moves about

This was my second option if I couldn’t find some proper steadies or bottle jacks. Will purchase a second one before we next go away.

It sure they are strong enough at 450kg a corner? Will do some research.

They don't jack the van up and are only intended to stop the rockin' so don't really take much load. I don't even bother with the metal bar to nip them up, I just let them drop to round level and give them a gentle nudge with my size 12s to snug them in. They seem to be plenty robust enough when I've used them.

Yep, you can buy them cheaply in Screwfix too.

I bought a pair from a Funster and paid £75 for them.
That's the same price as the ones Tony idle indicated.

I'll get all my money back if and when I change the van.

Our Burstner is rated to 3850kg & has a full width towbar fitted.

We use on of these on each end of towbar when pitched up for a while...

Lightweight, inexpensive and easy to use. We don't use them on the front so sold two of the four to another motorhomer and got most of our money back!

I took mine off and sold them, extra weight at the rear and never needed them, but quite happy
To move a little with the wind, if it’s really blowing then turn her to face the wind works for me,

I found the common plastic type corner stand steadies (that look like axle stands) didn't work for me, as the gap under the corner of the van was way too high without blocks up to the chassis. And, there was nothing else to fit them under apart from flimsy fibreglass. Until that is, I fitted a towbar and they now fit a treat against a flat section of the bar on each side. A cheap and simple solution to reduce rocking. Does mean some grovelling though to fit them under...

I fitted a towbar and they now fit a treat against a flat section of the bar on each side

Could I use two of these under the tow bar to steady van a bit? Kids running in and out all the time. Would put some wood under them.

Yes, anything that fits the gap and is convenient for you, whilst providing some support will help. The bottle jacks will be quite heavy, whereas the axle stand type are very light. See Corner Steadies

We had a pair fitted by ALKO in Southam. They work very well, easy to wind down, hold our long overhang steady when cranked, and will fold backwards if you drive off if you forget to put them back up - I haven’t yet. I put caravan-style pads on the ground to spread the load a bit, and for soft ground, as the base is only a couple of inches square.

My Autocruise with Alko chassis had these fitted at factory - accessed either side from rear and can be operated with suitableextended drill bit - do the job nicely (I added the feet) but do need some blocks to actually reach the ground if tail end is higher than front already.

Here’s ours fitted to Al-Ko chassis. I made a bracket to bring them nearer the edge.
