I exported our Hymer to France a few years back and will be re-importing it soon as we are moving back. I have seen that it is still actually on the DVLA site as SORN’d do I just get an MOT then un-SORN it or the other way round, or do I have to re-import it. I still have the old plates and I presume it will be given the same Reg-number As it is still on the system.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

I did that after 15years in Australia with it ( Land rover ,no sorn as sorn wasn't a thing when I left) just put the number plates back on and MOT and then taxed it :) Passed first time :)

Thanks for the replies. Sounds much easier than the six months it took to turn it French. As I have plenty of time perhaps it is best to contact DVLA first, just thought somebody on here might have done it To give an idea of the process.

I would put old plates on (assume it still shows your van details on site) get mot and try taxing it. When a friend of mine took his lotus to France his details dropped off the system and he lost his private plate, so if yours is still on I would try it🤞

If it’s on the system happy days. Last thing I would do is contact DVLA 😳😳

That’s a good point you need ref number from reg document to tax it 🤔

Strange that it is still on the system as when you exported it you would have notified DVLA of a perminant export.
Could be worth asking for a replacement V5 and see what happens.

If it is shown as sorn I'd jst try the new mot & unsorning?
Unless he's declared it SORNed every year he could land himself in for some hefty fines ... might be worth asking the DVLA a 'hypothetical' question 'for a friend'!

Presumably it was only SORNed whilst it was being exported, thereafter there was no further need to SORN again.

Maybe, the number was re-issued when you permanently exported and the vehicle that was subsequently issued it is currently sorned!

I still have a copy of the V5 so I have all the info. The info on the DVLA site is still for my vehicle. When I exported it DVLA said France would tell them when it was registered there so I did not need to inform them. When it comes to it I will get an MOT then see if I can tax it ok while still covered by the French registration. I was surprised to find it on the DVLA site as being SORN’d but presumed that was what they do Neve had to renew it but once got fined for not renewing a different vehicle because they didn’t send the usual reminder. They said it was up to me to remember and they were not obliged to send out reminders. Perhaps as Lenny says they now stay SORN’d until you take it off.
thanks for all the suggestions.

It should be "permanently exported" to be correct. normally as soon as you notify them that you are doing that they remove the registration number from the system immediately. Even if you have't yet left. A ridiculous situation.

Yes that is the best way & what I would also do.

yes they do. The days of yearly renewal are long gone

MOT and then try and tax it online , if it all goes thru your home , as being a computerised system i doubt if it will even be noticed by any human at DVLA . Its only when something out of the ordinary and human intervention that things become a problem :)

You don't have to declare it every year now days

I've just checked and the 'no need to SORN anymore' came into effect on 16 December 2013 so if you SORNed and exported it after this date you should be okay fine wise.

The Op didn't say he sorn'd it but the dvla must have until the french sent the paperwork. which they either did & the dvla didn't do anything or the French didn't. i wouldn't be worrying about it.

I suspect you are correct there Gus. Joined-Up is not what DVLA normally do I believe, nor the French Admin where internal departments refuse to talk to each other preferring to duplicate work.

There is a requirement to notify HMRC of the import (14 days) (NOVA), without their OK DVLA will not re-issue registration. We exported one of our cars when we moved to Germany, re-registered in Cologne. Some time later we came back to the UK with the same vehicle and had it re-registered in the UK. It did get the same registration details but that was not guaranteed. The number was still held against the original VIN but according to DVLA that does not automatically mean that number will be re-issued.
Even though no import duty will be applied as per continuous ownership from export/import the forms need to be completed for HMRC to be satisfied.
