One of the chief engineers was interviewed on the radio today describing how his patrols are being equipped for the increase in EV s braking down on the road. We should now understand that they are known ax First Responders !! Anyway they now have to carry a set of large wheel skates in the VW transporter van so that all 4 wheels are off the road. When asked about dealing with flat E Vs he revealed that they have a charging attachment and this is used with the DEISEL VAN to put some charge into the EV. Just like the Electric Excavator tat also needs charging from a lorry mounted deisel genny!!!!

Good evening,
Some communities up north here have been without electric for 4 days now I wonder how things will be when everything is electric, phones with no power cars not going anywhere no heating , etc
Yeah we’ve had around half the village without electric from Friday evening until yesterday evening. The electricity lovers and there are a few on here, have been conspicuous by their absence this weekend but that’s to be expected. The electric cars as is to be expected haven’t been able to move very much.
How the electricity lovers expect the increased demand and therefore supply problems to be dealt with I and probably they, don’t know. They will however continue to try to sell their very strange view of future energy sources.

Well the truth is there isn't an answer to a power failure, other than if you own an EV and you live in one of these areas then it's staying put until the power is restored, already some are still without power after 4 days.
A scenario they don't advertise in their glossy sales brochure.

Only half the village without electric? If you had an electric vehicle you could ask one of the houses with power for a refill, for an appropriate fee of course. Or go to a nearby charging point and recharge it.

Then you could get back to your house, plug it in, and have 40kWh of battery energy to keep the house going. That's equivalent to over 3000Ah at 12V. OK, it wouldn't last long, but you can go out and recharge it again the next day. At the very least it would keep the lights, TV and freezer going.

Some of us still work and don’t have hours to sit waiting for a charge for the car. The electric should be the only power fans just cannot justify, to me at least. Why anyone would put all their eggs in one basket.
Surely even the most ardent electric fans can see that having alternative power sources Is better.

It's only a couple of months ago that down south only the electric cars were moving around freely and without range anxiety :)

An RAC van having a generator there is really only the same as carrying jerry cans of fuel. It should be an emergency only thing, where a sensible owner with a non-faulty car doesn't run out of fuel (either fossil or electric). I really don't see a problem with that, especially at the moment when we are still building up the infrastructure.

There is value in having diversity of fuel though, especially in more remote areas, and I don't see diesel going for haulage for quite a while.

There must be a very high chance of EV vehicles running out of charge in awkward places when the roads get full of them. Combine that with smart motorways !! People will use them.

Power cuts are, for the most part, unpredictable. Even a prudent EV'er could get home with minimal charge left, intending to recharge overnight and finding the situation that many are currently facing.

Im starting to feel victimised my dears. Electricity lovers indeed..........

And as for "conspicuous by their absence" I for one just didnt see the thread but now I know you and Robnchris are involved Ill stay away cos your mostly wrong with your "facts"

So.......the power goes off and sucks all the range out of leccy cars does it  cmon lads..be real
The power goes off at home, work, remote chargers, friends/families houses/supermarkets/retails parks does it  cmon lads..be real
The power goes off for a full week at a time round a huge portion of the country does it or just your remote barn in the outer nobredies  cmon lads be real.
Hours waiting for a charge ...come into the 21st century please its lovely !!!!

Are you the only idiot with blinkers on in the village or are the more
You know what Im gonna say dont you, as I always say...give us some facts or sound reasoning and Ill listen all day long

yaaaaaawn.

I do think we need alternative transport sources though, you know like cycling and stuff ;) or maybe Ill just jump on my VTX1300 when the leccy gets sucked out of my car for a week and go to work that way. Proper petrol head like, once every what 10 years or something.

An electric car won't work for me yet due to the miles I travel and a lot of the places I go to I couldn't recharge at, I also drive a 4x4 double cab and I don't think there are any yet?

But:

If there is a long power cut I couldn't get diesel either as the pumps wont work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also drive a double cab and keep looking at the Rivian. It looks like a very costly but possibly usable pickup. I think it has a decent towing capability too. It just needs to become available at a price I can afford which once it’s 10 years old it probably will be but will the battery be goosed by then?

That’s an interesting option, a lot of money for a work vehicle though!
I wonder if they will come to the Uk

They are an awful lot of money. Don’t know about coming here, as far as I know they have only just started delivering in the USA.
Certainly a better looking truck than the very strange looking contribution from Tesla.

Hopefully better build quality than the Tesla as well, I looked at a new Tesla last time I bought a car and thought the build quality and materials were awful.

Might as well go back to a horse.

that's why I always kept a hundred gallons or so at home.& that was 20 + years back

ISTR that for about two weeks many ICE vehicle owners had their travelling restricted due to the nationwide difficulty to get fuel. ;)

Cars in the future will come with V2G technology or even a built in inverter like the Cybertruck and the Ford Raptor lightening F-150...

This means that if your house loses power from the grid you can run your house on the Vehicle battery if you wanted to.

The average house uses 8KWh a day. So a car with a 60KWh battery would last a week. Even longer if people cut back their usage.

Events like this where electric goes out for extended periods is extremely rare. 1-3 days is usually the longest. An EV would not only provide you transport but keep your house going in the meantime.

I'm gonna get a diesel generator and when the pumps run dry I'll run it on waste chip oil.
Simple solution to a non-existant problem.
Except......I won't be around when the pumps run dry.

Aye I’ve seen the quality, there’s one parks near me. Surprisingly it’s not white, it’s blue but I don’t think one panel fits correctly. As for big telly instead of a dashboard.

I think people forget it took around 40-50 years for ICE to become reliable enough to replace steam.
And back then some said it would never happen, UNTIL the carb was invented around 1880

EXACTLY! Electric everything is NOT the answer!

EXACTLY! Electric everything is NOT the answer!
No one is saying it is. All anyone is saying is that digging up carbon, burning it and chucking the resulting waste into the atmosphere is not sustainable.

Hmmm....I wonder f these thngs were said back in the day when GAS was stopped being piped through the streets for lighting etc. Nooooooooooo leccy is horrid, leccy is not the future.

Nobody is saying electricity is horrid but unlike the electric fans most of us think we should have more than one source of power, fuel. You know just in case one source fails, sort of like it has done in many areas of the country this last week.

Good morning ,

This mad rush for everything is moving too quickly for the infrastructure to be modernised some people have been told that it will be the end of the week before electricty is returned and some are washing in the local stream all this in 2021. We had a two hour powercut but we have a woodburner but even the green fanatics want to ban them . half a mile from us they were without power for three days.
