Interesting as I was unaware the RAC had a 6.4m limit on roadside picking up vehicles

I was left stranded after the RAC had a complete breakdown
There was a 10-hour wait when a motor home broke down and the contractor said it was too big to tow

My brother has a motorhome with comprehensive breakdown cover with the RAC. However, when it broke down on the M1, the RAC sent an independent contractor who took one look and said that the vehicle was too long and heavy for him to tow, before departing.
After failed promises by the RAC, my brother had to find and pay a commercial tow firm £340 to take the vehicle to a garage. Ten hours elapsed between his initial call to the RAC and the rescue. Under normal circumstances that’s inconvenient, but his wife has regular seizures, which made the wait positively dangerous.

Complaints about roadside assistance have increased 71% in the last financial year and are rising again, according to Martyn James of complaints-handling website Resolver. The most recent reviews on Trustpilot report waits of up to 12 hours for rescue by the RAC, which has been accused of reducing its staff and increasing premiums since being bought out by a private equity firm in 2011.

Last year, I reported the ordeal of a camper van driver who was stranded on a remote Welsh hillside for more than 30 hours after RAC subcontractors were unable to tow his vehicle. The RAC says that your brother was abandoned because his motor home exceeded the maximum length allowed under his policy and that he should have bought a specialist “Arrival” policy that covers vehicles more than 6.4 metres long. However, it admits that it failed him.
“We should have informed him that his policy didn’t cover large vehicles when he first rang us and let him know he would have to pay for recovery. As a result of this, it led to delays in being able to make his own arrangements.
“As a gesture of goodwill, we’ll be refunding the cost of the tow he paid for. We also offered to upgrade him to our specialist motorhome breakdown service, but instead he has chosen to cancel his policy with a full refund.”
Tedious as small print is, it pays to slog through it when buying cover. Motorists who are left impotent at the roadside are left stranded again when it comes to mediation because, unlike other insurance, roadside assistance was omitted from the Financial Services Act, so customers can’t complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service if their policy doesn’t deliver.

Since 2008 & many years tugging
He should have read his policy no point in taking out car breakdown insurance and expecting them to cover a Motorhome
As stated RAC Arrival covers Motorhomes, AA car policies have length, width & weight restrictions but if you buy AA cover with Comfort insurance it will cover large Motorhomes.

Don't think Green Flag has any restrictions for length.
We have GF, all the bells and whistles, annual premium is just under £140, covers any car we are in, anywhere, recovered to where we want, Double pick ups included (Break down on the way to a site, they take you there, then pick you up after your holiday is over then takes you to your home or a garage of your choice)

It certainly helps you sleep at night when you are driving a 28 year old vehicle:drinks:

We’ve been with ADAC for four years and thankfully have never needed them but gus-lopez has and said they were excellent.

As Lenny states, we renewed for a third year with Comfort Insurance, but this time we also took the breakdown cover as The Fiat Assist has just run out after 24 months.
Fist question I asked was can you repatriate a 7.4 Mtr MH, in The UK or anywhere in EU, the answer was YES!

Must also mention thanks to a fellow funster, we found out that most breakdown companies will not cover you for a puncture or wheel damage if you do not carry the appropriate spare wheel & tyre.
Also breakdown cover up to £300 "recovery costs" in the UK, and £5000 in the EU plus of course any overnight accommodation and a loan car to get you home (hopefully)
Should be revealing/Interesting to those that didn't know, so best advice is check you policy folks.

I used to be with RAC but when I needed them, they wouldn’t come.
I had the top level cover when some little sh#t decided to break into my car and steel the steering wheel!
I can only think that they tried using the crook lock to break the steering lock and the whole lot came off and so they left with it.
As I was away from home and it was 1am when I returned to my car, I called the RAC to have it recovered.
They refused to come and said it wasn’t broken down.
My wife had breakdown cover through Marks & Spencer’s car insurance, so she called them and they said we’ll send our breakdown guys. Who should turn up? The RAC, who recovered it to a garage.
So I’d paid for their top cover and they refused but my wife had a discounted add on cover to her insurance for the basic cover and they came.
I chucked them after that and went with Green Flag through the CC / C&MC. No weight or length limit and covers me not the individual vehicle.
I’ve also got the Comfort Insurance add-on breakdown cover which covers Europe as the Green Flag is extortionate for taking abroad.

since 2006 ( I think ! )
After the RAC ripped the whole front off a customised Transit ( it cost them several of our British pounds to rebuild and repaint ) despite me forcibly telling the tow truck bloke the front end was a dummy, I decided not to renew with them !!

Am I right in thinking Green Flag have a less than 16 year old vehicle limit for European cover?
I know Comfort wouldn't offer us European breakdown for our 1992 van.

(We have Nationwide flex account cover for 180 days in Europe and also ADAC .)

Living the dream.
A friend of mine had his car badly damaged in a multi storey car park when someone lost control coming down a ramp (never park at the bottom of a ramp). His front end was crushed and the rad leaking. He rang the RAC but they refused to attend because is was damaged and not broken down.

Sorry can't answer that as we hav'nt taken this one overseas.

We did however take our 1989 G reg to Europe, taking 16 days to amble through France down to Spain. From memory we took the caravan club "RED PENNENT" breakdown insurance for that trip, and once again from memory, we had to pay a surcharge of £27 because of the age of the vehicle.

The RAC are really not fit purpose My wife broke down on the 605 about 12.15 pm She had 2 young foster kids with her . They told her that they could not get to her until 17.30. Told them she was a old age person with two young kids . and was told sorry but was the best they could do . She also told them she was in a bus stop and causing problems with the bus. she rang back two hours later and told there was nothing they could do. I went down to her in my car. changed cars . I then sat and waited until they rang me and told me that it would be 18 30 until they would get there. I asked to speak to a manager . They said they would ring back 16.45 a young girl called Chelsea rang me and told me not to shout at her as she would hang up on me . I said nearly 5 hours was a bit to long to wait and the RAC was not fit for purpose . I was then told I was being very rude . and she was doing all she could. 17.15 van turns up told me clutch was u/s . He would call for a tow truck. And of he went telling me the truck would be with me in a hour. 18.30 no truck. Rang RAC. Told me that it was on its way.. Then the break down co called me and said just been rung by RAC and they would be with me. In a hour. They was there in the hour . They took me to a garage . By then it was 21 15. . The RAC said that the call was dealt with by 16.30. liars AS said U/S Ok rant over.

Steering wheels are usually stolen because the built in air bag is very expensive to replace.

a lot of recovery policies wont cover over 3.5T either
some 'included' recovery policies such as bank accounts or vehicle insurance dont really cover anything if you read the small print
if you have recovery through a 3rd party, bank/insurance/etc, ring the recovery people up and check you are covered as i have known people ringing up when a break down occurs only to find the recovery people have no knowledge of them

Not long enough!
Sometimes folk go on cost, without really checking if its suitable. Same with insurance.

I insured my RV 12mtr and 12 ton thru NFU , but they specifically mentioned that the breakdown cover doesnt apply . I therefore took out RAC Arrivals cover , and they were quite happy to provide cover for that size vehicle both in UK and EU . Thats for assistance and recovery including to repatriation .

Trouble with all insurances you dont know how good they are until you need them.
