My good ladies licence expires on 17th May 2025. We did not get an eye test (Annual in her case ) until 2 weeks ago for various reasons. The optician stated that whilst her vision was OK for the car side he could not get an acceptable result that the DVLA want for her C1 until her cataracts had been seen to. What we propose to do is renew her normal licence but state that an application for C! will be sent i n on the usual manner following her cataract surgery on a D2 & D4 medical.
Anyone ever been in this situation and do you think the DVLA will wear this.

She can apply to have her C1 reinstated later, I am sure others have done this but try and keep her old physical licence - say lost or something

Just get the normal B licence for now, don't over complicate things with DVLA.

You can just apply for the C1 when eyes are sorted, a friend recently had his C1 reinstated at 78 after letting it lapse at 70, it was no problem.

Agree with above.. the magic words are "you have entitlement" .
I let my HGV license lapse as I though I would never use it, a few years later I decided that I wanted it back but thought I had lost it. Phone call gave the words above, "you have entitlement so take medical and apply" I did and all was good..
BUT keep as much evidence as you can regarding current vehicles and groups that can be driven. At minimum a photocopy or as Annie says keep the original.

Just renewed my class 1 licence at 55,always a little nervous as I’m not at the doctors every 5 minutes, last visit to doctors 3 years ago with a strain of whooping cough after a what was thought a bad cold! No problems with eye test or blood pressure, happy days!

Just have your wife renew without a C1 and them when her cataracts are done and eyes ok then reapply for the C1 with medical and eye test.
Keep the existing licence showing C1 entitlement.

As above don’t mention the cataract there is no need to spook dvla.

I have NEVER submitted my licence at renewal or address change.
Too many tales of DVLA saying you NEVER had that category in the past.
Knowing DVLA if it ain't on their files you never had it but if you have proof in a document they issued, your old licence, they don't have a leg to stand on.
I doubt they'll accept a photocopy or photo....too easily manipulated today

Log onto dvla website check your licience and print it off /save it take photo of licence front and back and store together. All date stamped

mohawkman my wife was in the exact same situation last summer although she still had a good period to run on her B license. When she has had successful cataract surgery she applied for her C1. Unfortunately D4Drivers messed up and caused problems with eye tests but eventually after a DVLA approved peripheral eye test the DVLA accepted everything and she now has her C1.

As above always make copies of your existing license and the DVLA website record in case they don't supply a new license with all the correct categories.
