I listen to Jeremy Vine on radio 2 every day at home. That is not the problem before anyone makes a jocular remark. The problem is the volume levels between the spoken word and the awful music. Have to turn the volume up to listen to the interviews and as soon as the musical racket starts I have to turn it down again. Why is this? Is there a device that will automatically do this for me. I can’t be the only one .

Same on the tv. My tv supposedly has auto volume control, doesn't work.

IIRC adverts on TV have the volume increased to gain your attention.
As mentioned above , many TV's have a setting to suppress this, which I have found does not work on my Sony.
Never heard of it on a radio before.

I often have to do the same......................but I thought it was just because I’m going a bit mutton :giggle:

Subscribers  do not see these advertisements

It is called AGC ( automatic Gain Control ) , and has been a standard part of all radio and tv receivers since the 1950's
Unfortunately, around 1995 they ( the broadcasters ) developed 'compressed sound' which defeat it
