Hi i brought a hymer related plate for hamish and tryed to assign the plate online , the dvla site told me im umable to do this for this motorhome,
I then phoned dvla and customee service couldnt do it or explain why so ive had to send them in the paperwork and someone has to come out to inspect hamish.
Has anyone had a problem assigning private plates and why?

Hi Hamish, the most obvious reason for this is that you cannot make a vehicle appear younger than it is.
Therefore the number plate cannot be assigned to a vehicle first registered before the age of that plate.

Yes i know that but dvla have comfirmed that is not the case, the moho is insured and taxed what puzzled me is they want to inspect hamish
Hes a right hand drive and was bought new in ireland

Just had ours done by a company who catered for all its requirements. By that ..I chose the Number plate and had it all done for Hubby. The plates came to us within 7 working days together with a certificate and a new Log book stating the new number etc.
Thought it was much simpler to be honest .
Hope you get it sorted soon.

By Ireland do you mean Northern Ireland or Eire?
If the latter is it currently on a UK plate or is it still on an Irish plate?
If Irish, do you need to go through an importation process to import \ register in UK?
Some of the guys that have imported from EU should be able to advise if you need to reregister.

I've recently done a few swaps on line no problems and instant but they do say the vehicle must be taxed and available for inspection if req. maybe they pick so many at random.

Never had a problem, 5 minutes to buy online, a few days for the paperwork to arrive and then another 5 minutes online to assign it to a vehicle.

Did you do any checks when buying your MH, maybe it could be flagging to DVLA as stolen or cloned?

I had an issue with the last one I did, there had been a gap in the MOT history before I bought, had to apply by post, but no inspection and all done in a week

Hopefully yours might be similar and they won’t actually inspect

I've had this in the past, had to take the Porsche to local DVLA centre. They checked vin number etc. Think they do it occasionally looking for ringed cars.

We have private plates on both of our vehicles (MH & car). We have transferred the one on the car a few times as we've bought newer vehicles.

Mostly all gone smoothly. However, there are various rules that have to be adhered to, concerning recipient vehicles being taxed and MOT'd etc as well as the vehicle age issue.

Wondering what sort of vintage the OP's Hymer is?

When I used to deal with private plates & transfers ,occasionally I would get a vehicle with it stamped on the V5 that it was not possible to transfer the plate from the vehicle or another plate onto the vehicle. No idea why?

One of my cars has a gap in tax with a previous owner. This blocked me assigning the plate online.

I’ll be slapping my plates on the MoHo as soon as the import paperwork comes back from the DVLA....I hope.

First attempt was sent back with 2 errors which were corrected by return... hope to use the MoHo this weekend but I’m not hopeful....

This can happen when a plate desirable plate is transferred from an older vehicle and an age related plated is then assigned to that vehicle

I've several classic (1940's and 50's) m/bikes where the V5 states that the reg'n number is 'Non transferable' . It's very common (I carry out m/cycle validation inspections on behalf of DVLA) when the orig (apparently desirable) reg'n has been sold or the vehicle has been untaxed since all vehicle reg details were computerised in 1979, or it's a reconstructed vehicle (aka a Bitsa). DVLA then allocate a previously unissued but 'Age related' number and mark the new V5 'Non transferable reg'n'.

my neighbour bought a bmw with norther irish plate, which dvla refused to change to his personalised plate

My 2007 reg Hymer is originally from NI too. It has its original Northern Irish format of three letters followed by four numbers. I will keep that. They are not very exciting reading, but they are non dating. I do have private plates on my car and motorbike though.

We did nit have any problem, sold our old camper which I had placed a private plate, had the old reg swapped back before I sold the Camper the private number was allocated to a certificate, brought a new Hymer and that has been registered with our private plate which was all very straight forward.

We did a reg plate transfer, sent off all the necessary paperwork, after two weeks I phoned the DVLA to ask how things were progressing they said they had sent the new V5 back to me.
Despite it being lost on their posting I had to pay £25 for a replacement log book.

Just try that it was a great idea it came back no details on both regs

One of the many advantages of living in a Socialist Paradise is the absence of personalised plates and all the worries attached thereto.

My new log book is allegedly in the post back to me....as soon as it arrives I’ll try to change over to the private plate...

Indeed no age related or private plates here ! Our car got its reg plate as a new car next car to get the next number was 1928 collection car . Next car next number. Simples fir once in French admin ! They don’t understand personalised plates .

Arrived back home after a long weekend away in the bus with home made plates with the Reg number the
DVLA gave us over the phone (strangely they looked like Swedish plates..on a LHD. No one seemed to mind.) and found our new log book in the post box. Immediately switched them for our own plate on line with no issues.
The docs came 2nd class and not in the 1st class self addressed and stamped envelope I’d sent them...also missing is the C.O.C I’d enclosed and asked to be returned in the pre paid envelope...
