Hymer Grand Canyon S
We had planned to looking spring/ summer and potentially buying autum. Not really “needing” the van until we retire in April next year. However a van has come up in a dealer we recently visited. High level summary it has all the bits we wanted plus a few more with the price (after some negotiation) roughly the same. Also it’s a “Crossover” where the one we optioned was a standard MLT. It is on their site ready for delivery

So would appreciate thoughts on deal. Basically it’s 10% off the Hymer list price with all options. In addition they will fling in an installed Sigma S37 alarm and Tracker (not sure on make of tracker). Is this good ? Is Sigma a reasonable make ? Where can i go with dealer to sweeten the deal further ?

In addition, my concern is, IF market is dropping, there might be much better deals in autum / early 2026 and i would have immediately lost a lot on this deal.

10% off a Hymer in the UK is quite a good deal, you could hang on and hope to get a better deal but you might not find what you want, Crossovers are not that common if you can afford it go for it.

FYI, in the past we have always imported and saved considerable sums but the current van we bought in the UK delivered June 2024 and paid full list. Had to wait nearly 2 years but we did get a fixed 2022 price & a very good trade in.
It turned out to be the right desission as they stopped producing the van we wanted for the 2025 model year.

When you've finished negotiating the best price, offer 5% less, if the dealer declines just tell him you will wait until later in the year when prices will be lower and walk away. On the other hand if it's definitely the van you want then go for it, there's plenty time to enjoy it before your retirement .

Look at this way, you can wait for the van to get cheaper...how long will you wait ....but you aren't getting the use from it are you ?

Buy now, then in 3 months you could have saved ???? and you'll kick yourself for not waiting ....conundrums eh ?

My thoughts would be along the lines of
  • It is available now at the spec you want
  • While ticking off the days to retirement, you can still get a season of use and practice from it.
  • The potential savings at the end of the season are worthless if you then cannot get the one you want.
  • A season’s use has a value that helps to bridge the potential cost difference of buying at the end of it.
  • If the alarm and tracker aren’t exactly what you want, negotiate for the one you do as it isn’t fitted yet.
Lastly from experience, you can make as many plans for the future as you want but things can change unexpectedly. Live for today as tomorrow isn’t a certainty.

We bought ours from stock before we needed it in 2019, was the best decision we made!
Don’t show too much enthusiasm, suggest you’re prepared to wait, but I’d go for it, push for a bit more off as the market is slow, round the price down. 10% is typical lazy salesman approach just plucking a number from the air. (My sales team used to do the same! Drove me mad as something random sounds more considered i.e 6.7% etc)
You could wait but dreaded inflation possibly means prices go up, no guarantees that things will be cheaper in the future as they don’t normally.

I would look more into why it is reduced in price. We were recently considering a new BMCT580 and the dealer was pushing it a bit, very good spec and reduced in price. Waiting a bit and researching the different specs it turns out it’s the 2024 model, not the 2025 that they’ve had since October last year. Only some minor changes in spec but it’s on the 2024 Mercedes cab not the updated 2025 and it has the previous generation Lithium Smart Battery pack, not the improved 2.0 version that’s current. They still have it.

My thoughts:
1. Check that the tracker and alarm are OK with insurance companies. You don't want to find yourself with just one quote because the combo is not on the list of your preferred insurer. Caravan Guard's website has a list of trackers/alarms approved by them. That might be a good starting point.
2. Further sweeteners - What extras are you going to need? No point in paying full retail if the dealer will supply at cost. How about a refillable gas cylinder?
3. Re the market dropping - Who knows? What is certain is that buying new it will depreciate once delivered and in your hands.
4. It took me half a season to get my "mature" Hobby T500 fully sorted to my needs. There is a steep learning curve when new to all this. If you plan a gentle start to 2026 you can wait. If you have plans to book a ferry come April 2026 and be abroad for 3 months you are going to need some lead time to get yourself properly sorted.
5. Finally something that I take it you already have on board - Are you comfortable that you both have and will keep your C1 licences for the foreseeable?

Thanks for all the great advice. A lot to think about. I think we are in a good position to push them bit more as I feel they are pushing us quite hard (probably to get the sale on books for half year end! ). We know for sure it is a 2025 model as there are some obvious differences and we have the full spec sheet for the one we are looking at.

Hi mylastidea We've got a MLT 570 and have been really pleased with it, it's a great motorhome! However it's not the Crossover version.

I'm not sure if you've seen Rog NotJane 's thread below, but CaptainPaul joined the thread and there's quite a lot of detail on there about his experience with his recent purchase of the Crossover version.

I hope Rog NotJane and CaptainPaul don't mind me tagging them on this thread. 🤞

Saw my name pop up and thought I'd throw in my tuppence worth, I bought mine new in May just past, it's the ML-T 570 4x4 CrossOver i bought it straight with no trade in (as the van I had a Malibu was falling apart) so I had to sort that before moving it on... anyway I paid the full asking price for it but instead of discount I went for extras which I have found most hard nosed dealers will do quicker for you than give you money back, I think they can work their books better that way, anyway I got a full gaslow supplied & fitted (including 2 x full bottles) habitation air conditioning, cat 1 tracker & alarm, alloy wheels, fitted oven grill combo, and a tow bar & electrics... total overall was around £5500 saved on extras that I probably would have fitted myself anyway,
As regards the van it's fantastic, lovely to drive and solid as a rock, I've been over hill & Dale in it across some fields and through a forest and there's not a squeek in it, lovely comfy beds and a lot of high spec gadgets all and all a super wee van, I have had a lot of issues with the automatic gearbox but I reckon they're all down to me as I'm not a fan of autos and think if this van was manual it would be the perfect van, especially in 4x4 guise, I feel the auto box is wasted, but you get the paddle shifters to compensate and after listening to a lot of CrossOver 4x4 owners on here and other forums that seems to be the way to go and since using them more I'm enjoying the van more, but I stress again the auto box is my issues and not the van
As regards waiting for prices to drop I would be careful of that as these wee vans seem quite desirable and where I bought have another 1 in now at 3k more than I paid less than 2 months ago and with none of the extras! So be careful in case they keep going up!
Either way good luck with whatever you decide to do, if I can be of any more help drop me a message above
Cheers Paul

Thanks. Great information. I am getting closer to just going for it. It has quite a lot on it they we would not have configured or really wanted BUT specify the same van with only the configuration we would have wanted gives a cost of only 3k under current offer. So this is pushing me further to going for it.

i think I'm going to say i don't want the Sigma alarm but ask for them to fit a Scorpion Cat 1 alarm and immobiliser OR reduce the cost by what they are saying is the value of the Sigma % immobiliser (about 1.8K !!). Also they mentioned they can fit 150W panels instead of the Hymer 90W ones so I will push for that as well. They can only say no….lol

Make sure they fit a decent solar controller like a Victron MPPT rather than the cheap tat dealers often fit.
Hi, I believe that the Hymer will already have its own solar controller as the 90W panels come as standard on this model. Dealer mentioned they can upgrade to 150w so my assumption was upgrade would only involve the panels. Is this correct or not…? Thanks

It will probably have a decent controller then.

If it's the one you want and it's ready to go, no waiting a year , get it bought 👍 if it's new it won't be cheaper next year ,guaranteed.

My view would be to purchase now . The reason being I think dealer prices are at the bottom now. There are some heavy discounts being offered to dealers on stock vans from the factories in Germany and Europe . Everyone needs to keep money turning over. The danger if you wait. ( in my view) is that manufacturers will cut production to create demand to move prices forward. Cutting production means cutting overheads which is sensible for any manufacturer in a saturated market ! If you have found the van and spec you want and have a good deal on the table , if you have the cash then splash it ! I know many a person that hesitates and waits and missed the boat ! Manufactures have to react to overstock and falling prices, don’t forget it’s the manufacturer that is financing through extended credit many of the dealers. The other consideration of course ….. is the longer you wait , more dealers may go out of business !
Good luck with what ever you decide 👍

If they are a Hymer fit they will be flexi solar panels. Mine was bought without factory fitted solar but I'm about to have 2 x 100w plus 1 x 150w fitted. As I have the rear panoramic skylight option there is very little space to left on the roof so I've had to go for slimline flexi panels. This is on a Mlt580 roof - the 570 is tad shorter.

I'd echo what the Captain says. I've put 13,500 miles on my MLT since last October, and around 90 nights use. It's nice to drive, personally I'm a fan of the auto box but you need to train it to change up and so down using the paddles.

I see you have a Grand Canyon S ... I've had one also - the wheelbase on the the MLt is the same as the GCS so they feel very similar to drive, just have to account for a slightly longer rear overhang.

I think it's sensible to try and get the best deal but also think how you would feel if someone else bought it while you were trying to get a better deal. If you would think never mind there's going to be another negociate hard if you would be really disappointed think about accepting what's offered.

We have just bought a new to us van and have negotiated a discount an the price shown and during the pre sale service they found a fault which has slightly delayed our collection but they have to wait for a part (has to come from Italy). They could have just let it go but have done an amazing job and despite being four hours from us I would still use them. Despite having extra items added the price is still below what it was priced at!

Hi. That suggests to me that the solar panel upgrade is limited by the size of the mppt(hopefully) controller. A bigger panel would probably require an upgrade in capacity of mppt controller.
