polarity

If you are joining an inverter then can't you just attach directly to batteries Positive and negative?

He wants to know if its positive or negative earth.
You only wire 12v electronics the wrong way once.....it releases the magic smoke.

Hi pappajohn I was trying to skip needing to know as if he connects directly to battery it won't matter? Also, didn't they stop positive earth in the 1950's. 😁

So, to actually answer the question, the battery negative is connected to the chassis and bodywork, so it's negative earth. Any vehicle made since the 1960s will have negative earth.

Agreed re: 1950s.
In general, if you connect a 12v electronic item the wrong way round it will blow.
If the system was Pos earth it would blow as soon as connected to the Pos post and what would normally be earth

My old cricket roller is 6v Positive Earth, gravity fed fuel, no water pump.... Had to teach myself about setting points and carbs but the backwards electrickery did catch me out.

Flash the dynamo, reverse the battery and coil and you'll never have to think about it again. 😁 Did it a few times in the late '60s when fitting negative earth radios to positive earth cars.

I've had to replace mine several times.

I've had to do that on my 1940's and 1950's m/bikes when upgrading filament bulbs to polarity-sensitive LEDs.

Thanks for the input guys, I could see the vehicle polarity by lifting the Bonnet , and using a multimeter pos .to earth ascertains the system polarity. The first unit was duff . Was just trying to make sure before plugging in the replacement stevie g

My inverter is connected directly to the battery and independent of the main 12v circuits having dedicated three pin outlets. Much simpler.
