Hi looking for any help would be greatly appreciated, we hit another car at the weekend a complete accident and bumped our Nissan homy campervan- damaged the bumper and the light and probably the main thing that has happened has been that the door has bent outwards- I think we need a new door- insurance company arent interested as its too old... just saying its beyond repair for them to fix. But surely there must be somewhere that we could get a replacement door- or one custom made? Does anybody know any specialist places for campervan repairs? Any help please, one extremely sad campervan owner :(

No big 1 that was my first though when I looked at the pics that were posted.
Possible the bulkhead has been deformed too! For what at first glance looks like minor damage the cost of repairing to a roadworthy standard starts to look expensive.

I suppose it depends on where the impact was. If the door was directly hit, the A-post might have survived. I would have thought that it doesn't take an almighty hit in order to deform the door as it has been. I can't tell from the photo (area taped up) whether the windscreen survived (presume it's laminated). In any case, given the Ins. Co. is uninterested, and the owner would like to keep it, I think it's worth getting a professional opinion (as opposed to us guessing from a couple of photos). Sometimes, the financial aspect isn't the be-all and end-all (y)

Its not the damage you can see but the damage you can't see that is the worry. I'm afraid the cost of a body shop doing that type of work will be horrendous. At £80 or more per hour, a days work + parts + paint, a couple of grand will soon ebb away. We all wish you could have it back on the road as quickly and cheaply as possible but prepare yourselves for the worst and hope for the best.

Don’t overlook that you have a contract with the insurers which in essence says that they must put you back in the same position after the accident as you were before. They can do this by repairing it (declined) or paying the market value.

Mike

Or the third option that they find/supply an identical vehicle in the condition yours was in, with the same or less mileage.

Thank you for all your help, my husband is on the phone to the insurance company now, to ask about buying it back. Its reassuring to know that they write our poor vans off for next to nothing. I understand that the van will then be a cat D, but the thing is its more sentimental to me than anything as my uncle built the inside for us from scratch. All new electrics brand new everything! As you say we may be able to trade it in, in the future if we upgrade. Right now we would just like to get it fixed.
My husband has just called and the insurance company have said that they need to asses it- take it away, then they need to make us an offer on the van depending on the market value and damage, so I guess our starting point is to find out ourselves how much the repair would cost us. He is going to ask some body shops locally if they can help and an idea on cost. I have everything crossed for us!!

Do not let the vehicle out of your possession. If they wish to inspect it then they come to you. If it gets taken as others have said you most likely won't see it again.

do not let the insurance take the vehicle away chances are you wont see it again
& if you do anything useful will most likely have been stripped out ,on the assumption that you will be being paid off.

Many years ago, I let my insurance take one of my Escort vans in for assessment. I bought it back to repair. When I collected it from the yard (In London) the tyres and rims had strangely been swapped for some smooth tyres on old wheels. Insurance firm just never replied to any correspondence!

i have spent a few hours looking for parts to repair this old urvan and sorry to say they are just not out there

personally i would buy the written off vehicle from the insurance company and use it as a donor vehicle to convert a newer van of similar size. fitting the old units, beds and fittings into something cheaper to maintain.

I hadn't come across these vans before, but hey presto I spotted one on Ebay.
Just because seller in Bristol, I looked up their other listings
Quite a list of Japanese imports

And another Homy. Might be worth the OP giving them a ring to get a price to buy another like hers if insurance want write off.

Take the insurers offer, assuming it's insured fully comprehensive, then buy it back off them.
It will always have a cat D right off flag on the database but that won't exclude you getting future insurance after its been repaired, inspected and MOTed.
The money from the insurers will help pay for a good bodyshop.
A friend of mine bought a vehicle back from the insurers after a cat D write off, he had to re-vic the car before it could go back on the road. Not sure if that still holds true?

Unfortunately it doesn't have to be that old. We've had two cars written off by the insurance co., both of which we'd had from new. One was a six year old Nissan Pixo.

Malcolm

The Pixo probably wasn’t a write off. The insurer probably just thought they would be doing you a solid by taking it off the drive for you ;)
