before this it was in the 90 s
We have a Elddis 105 2015 When we switched on the Sat Nav a message came up saying updates were needed We have no idea how to rectify this situation We have booked to go France next week so are frantic to put this right in time HELP

Apart from the chance of a new road in France not being in the map database (you will see the little avatar driving across a green space) very little will have changed since the last update. Not really anything to worry about as long as the satnag stays operative.

France is now a whole new kettle of poisson. Good luck.

We've got the Prestige 105 but it's a year older so luckily we missed out on vehicle sat nav 👍
Good luck 🙂

Most sat naps will continue to operate without the updates. They might just show a different route if they don’t know about a new road.

As above responses. Nothing to worry about. The present maps will be 95% accurate and the changes will not create much difficulty.

So nobody knows how to reset?

I think it might be more complicated than just resetting...

Undated software, bought and downloaded from the relevant website, needs to be loaded into the sat nav.

I would try asking Google...

JJ

Generally (TomTom, Garmin) you update by first downloading the data to a PC.
What's the make and model of the satnav?
Your manual may tell you.
If you don't have one try here:

Spriddler, thanks for your reply to my predicament The make of the Satnav is a TomTom but the model I can not answer at the moment because the van is in storage some miles away 'Down loading the data to a PC' - that is what I do not understand what to actually to do, I know nothing of computers as I am ancient! I need step by step directions, are you willing?

I've been saying this for a long time.
Any new roads (mainly bypasses) will be very well signposted and the sat-nag will reroute anyway.
My last TomTom update, over 2 years ago, showed NO new data for UK roads.
Waste of a 7hr update. (slow connection)
Prior to that it took 5 updates to include a new roundabout near Whitby, the roundabout was in use 18 months before the update.

I have a tom tom Go Live which i update regularly as i get free maps and pay for live services but be careful if its an old one (mine is and i get emails weekly giving me upgrade offers ) as it can tell you its outdated and you need a new one. What you will have to do is download My Drive onto your computer off the Tom Tom website ,create a free account and log in , connect your TomTom via a USB cable to the computer and it should recognise your machine ,it will then give you a list of updates. But as all say i would not worry to much about updating as the roads don't change that much.
Any more help needed just message me.

Can you identify what Nav unit you have as it will depend on the base vehicle manufacturer.

Remember the satnav only has a map onto which it then puts GPS positions(from satellites) to give your current position and intended destination to overlay a route on the satnav stored map. and then directions to follow the route.

As said the roads and maps do not change much. The GPS is always there for your position.

As a back-up look at your rout before setting off and make a mental note of the major points en-route and if necessary follow the signs - I am sue you can remember that method ;) :giggle:

Don't worry, crack on.

I am in a similar situation with knowledge of technology....... normally ask the G / kids.

If you have had the unit from new, then the chances are the last update was at manufacture, which will have been 2014.
Travelling with a map 7 or 8 years out of date is not too much of an issue.

What you will notice most is missing roundabouts and the odd new road where the satnav will have you travelling across open fields

However you want to update it, you will need a PC or laptop before you start.
You will also need the unit, as depending on make and model you either have to plug the unit it into your PC or remove a SIM card and plug that into your PC

You will need to join up with the manufacturers membership scheme to get the update, which will not be free (usually circa £70 for an update)

If all the above sounds way beyond your technical abilities and you don't have a local friend or relative prepared to spend what could take several hours to download, then just go with what you have.

I copied the required sheets of the road atlas, laminated them and then drew the route with a "permanent" marker when we went to Italy. I used this as a back up to the satnag. The permanent marker can be erased using nail varnish remover (outside as acetone is flammable).

I also made a note of major junctions where we might have gone wrong or where we had to leave one road and join another.

Our last car had built in satnag which was several years out of date and required a new data disc to be purchased (about £90 I think) and installed to update it. I declined to do so as I use a satnag in a car to find addresses / routes in towns I am unfamiliar and they don't change much. New roads / streets are unlikely to be on the satnag anyway.

Spriddler, thank you so much for your latest reply, that is just the kind of reply I have been waiting for One last question please - if I decide to ignore the message on the Satnav how do I continue?

I have a TomTom GO 50 but only update it about once a year as very few significant changes occur road/route wise and the update can take hours to download .
I don't recall how I ignore the update notification and it's not to hand at the mo but I think I just go the Menu (three dots at bottom left of the screen?) and the notification disappears.
When I update mine I use MyDrive Connect on the TomTom website but it's very long-winded to explain. I recommend you ignore the updating for now as others have said but if you really want to have a go here's their website (which will probably put you off the idea ;) ).
Full instructions how to do it here:

I would advise making sure you know the names of places on the way to your destination, years ago I was in Spain on my Harley following sat nav no problems until a newly built motorway which then had a fork I had no knowledge of any towns listed on the direction board I went right and got totally lost almost ran out of petrol before I came to an exit and found a filling station, I bought a map and I was 50 off course in the wrong direction, so I had added an extra 100 miles to my 350 mile journey.😠 I always check carefully now although it's a lot easier to check a map whilst driving than on a motorcycle 🙂

Thank you Spriddler you are a star If yoy live within 30 miles of me I will buy you a pint!!

West Sussex?? Left there after 20 years to come to Ludlow, ar well my thought was there...

I guess you don't have a smartphone?

You could just use Google maps.
