I am learning fast 😊
I was thinking whether we are allowed to carry in the motorhome a gallon of diesel. Just in case one breakdown. Thanks.

Read through your post and yes it says petrol may be carried in a can....no mention of diesel being carried in a can.....
This may be where OP's confusion arose from regarding carrying diesel.👌👌

However, don't try and carry one on the ferry. A while back while waiting to board at Newhaven they had a blitz on these, there was a large bay filling fast with peoples fuel containers. I used to carry one but luckily didn't on that occassion.

I think you are worrying too much unless you intend traveling to some really remote places.
The Ducato tank is good for over 400miles, the reserve when on empty is good for at least 50 miles.
I have never been close to running out --- ever.

Remember the days when if you ran out of diesel you had to bleed the whole fuel system?
Yes indeed.... much easier to keep an eye on fuel gauge. My philosophy is refuel before it gets to a 1/4 tank.

I think you will find its both illegal to carry a fuel can in Germany and also illegal to run out of fuel at least on the motorway?

As Stealaway says.... in this day and age nobody should be running out of fuel....
Unless of coarse you are really tight fisted and drive past a dearer fuel stop HOPEING you can get to a cheaper one before you run out.

There are 5 LT metal jerry cans available, for those of us with a nervous disposition who don't leave home without at least two spare pairs of Y fronts, spectacles, £1.00 coins, handkerchiefs, .

I carry 2 x 20L metal jerry cans. one means with a full tank that I can run right through France without filling & the other spare.

Like going to I o M for the races.

They didn’t find my two cans buried underneath everything 😉😊

When you have seen how much mess 5ltrs of diesel makes if the plastic can splits, in your vehicle. Especially if it is hot, the fumes are horrible

Whilst I was at training school one of the sub officers ran a fire engine out of diesel. This is just about a sacking offence. I told him I could bleed it through without him having to get the mechanics out. I didn’t do one picket duty for the rest of my recruits course.👍🏻👍🏻

Remember the days they syphoned EVERY motorbike tank before boarding the ferry.... Early/mid 70s.
Left just enough to get the petrol station in Douglas..... Who's storage tank was below sea level and consequently you had to drain water from your tank and carbs.
Never did find out where the syphoned fuel went.
