Hi All. What paperwork or injections do I need to organise so that I can take my greyhound to Eire from Scotland through Norther Ireland? Do I need a pet passport? I find the official websites not too clear about this.

We took our dog to Southern Ireland Pembroke to Rosslare. Vet provided us a passport and worming as we were only gone a couple of days as you need to have dog wormed prior to return to UK.

Nothing at port, no one remotely interested and that was Southern Ireland. We went Scotland to Northern Ireland and never got checked but that was twenty years ago.

I would suggest looking on ferry operators website or give them a call. Technically you must need a Passport as South is part of EU but no borders between north and south so once on Ireland no one is going to be there to check.

Unfortunately DEFRA not much help, 10 years ago we took our daughters horses to Southern Ireland and DEFRA sent us a 28 page form to be sent to the Regional Authority responsible for the port we were sailing from which was The Welsh Assembly, having faxed over the form we got a phone call back saying “what is all that rubbish. An animal welfare office did stop us leaving ferry - only Irish side not UK on return (pretty obvious in big horse lorry) passed the time of day and asked how many horses and how many people (a ratio thing perhaps?) and wished us a nice weekend.

Good luck getting sense from authorities and hopefully someone has very recent experience of your specific journey.

I went from Wales to the republic and then up through NI and back to Scotland a couple of years ago. No checks anywhere. The land border makes it pointless having any checks.

Legally you need the dog microchipped and pet passport with an in date rabies vaccination. No worming or vet check required on re-entry to the UK unlike when returning from say France.

Many thanks for all your helpful replies. It seems we may not get there for a bit as our dog has not been too well for the last couple of weeks. Three vet visits, lots antibiotics and anti inflammatories and she is still not recovered enough to take away yet. Some virus?. Hopefully we will get on holiday there sometime this summer when she is recovered.

Aww hope your dog is better soon.!!
We live in N.ireland and there currently are and have not been for years any sort of border checks between the North and south of Ireland, especially checks for dogs.
Plus at the same time we have travelled to Scotland many times with both P&O and Stenna line and none do any dog checks.

Our dog is a greyhound and we live in Yorkshire so flat cap is obligatory

Very good to hear your comment Bart. Very reassuring. Do you leave your dog n the Motorhome or put them in the kennels?
I think the hound is getting better as she showed interest in food last night. We are both getting experts at swallowing huge tablets at the first attempt after lots of practice.

We take the dog with us ,, dont worry about it , we have never seen any police / garda checks at the border for the last few years, there is over 250 crossing points between Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland.

That was a very interesting article. I wonder how they manage with Switzerland which has several borders with other countries who are in the EU while Switzerland itself is not and has said it will not join, yet commerce goes on without hard borders all the time.

Definitely feel happier about taking the hound now. Thank you :) (Hopefully got the emoji this time. When I type them on my phone they don't appear on here.)

@Busybees as it happens we have actually just set off on trip from our home in Northern Ireland to southern Ireland in the MH with our dog and will be going over the border again, so I'll repost here later to update.

We've just passed from the North to the South and would not even notice it, only reason I know we are now in the south is that the speed signs have changed from mph to kph, absolutely zero checks, not even so much as 1 psni or garda personal.

Neither is it in the EEA but it is part of the single european market which bestows the same rights on its citizens & businesses as members of the other two.+ schengen .

Ahh Didn't realise that. But as members of the EEA can they make their own trade deals with other countries or are they totally tied to EU single maker deals. Other countries like Pakistan have free trade deals with EU but don't have to pay into EU.

Hi All
Thanks again for the updates but we will not be taking our lovely greyhound to Ireland after all. The vet visits showed she has a huge inoperable tumour of the liver and spleen and has only days left so we are spending our time with her.
