Pet Passports after 1st Jan 2021 - New Govt. Advice?

We have just subscribed to receive weekly emails from Gov.co.uk regarding any new information about travelling/staying in the EU post 1.1.2021.

Whilst doing so I happened upon this page below which appears to give "New" information regarding Pet Passports and future requirements.
My apologies if this is not current because, as we no longer need Pet Passports, we have not kept up to date on them.

Not if he doesn’t have any pets, he won’t. Which is presumably what he meant.

Thanks for that. Our dogs were passported in 2004 but as all four are gone now, we no longer need their passports. Should have made it clearer.

I see that a uk pet passport will no longer be valid after Jan 2021. Our dog is a rescue and has a Portugese passport , doesn’t seem to be any advice for that. Looks like a licence for vets to print money, regulatory disaster, needless to say I voted remain.

No one will know what or if until negotiations are completed or not this year..I dont know why people are speculating or presuming the outcome..Whatever will be will be and we will find out when and if its all decided,,Chill out,,BUSBY

If I have been told the correct tale by DeFRA having a French passport for Casper means that the visit to the vets prior to leaving UK shores will not be necessary. That is as long as you have blood test results. Mind you I was told that a few months ago, so it could all change before December 2020.

Spoke to our vet on Friday, they don’t know much more than us! For this year, carry on as before , for next year keep ears open around October and November if you are travelling with pet early next year as you may need extra tests etc.... but it all depends!

The annoying thing is that the Gov does not appear to give a toss re tourists / travellers in our situation.

Fair enough, there is more important things to negotiate / plan for, but we all still need to make plans and sorting out our pets is an important part of that.

As many have said, the rules might be this, they might be that........unfortunately we will just have to wait until nearer the time to see what eventually (might) happen.

Hopefully sanity will prevail and we will keep to the passport system which is easy to understand and administer, especially as there is no increased risk of animal disease (for pets) just because B***it happened.

We are thinking of taking are dog in July to France for the first time so do we need a pet passport or is it a case of rabies injections and the blood test 4mths before ?

Passport with details of rabies injection and chip number.
You cannot travel until 21 days following rabies jab.
No blood test required at the moment.
Speak to your vet, he will give rabies injection and issue passport as well.

Dolly's 3 year rabies booster is due this year, because of family commitments we have no plans to go abroad this year, so not sure if we should have it done. If they do bring in the requirement for a blood test she may need another booster when we go next year, as some dogs have failed the test even though their medication was up to date.

BUT,

If they don’t bring in the blood test, you still won’t be able to go due to letting your rabies lapse. So will need full injection not just booster.

I think we will have it done, it isn't due until July so we have some time to think about it, Dolly hates going to the vet so we don't want any more visits than we need. Also she has had a bad time lately, she had had to have on operation to re seat her knee cap and is still being treated for stomach problems, so we are doing our best to keep away from the vet as long as possible.

It would be good to know what will happen next year so we can make the right decision. But as this is being done by the government I'm not hoping for much.

Just ask Boris and he'll give the answer you want to hear. It'll be a lie but it'll be what you want to hear.

On serious note, speak to your vet for the latest info but if the rules that your dog has to clear the blood test are still current then I suggest you move quickly because some dogs fail the test first time and have to be re-tested. While the cost of this is (very!) annoying, more annoying will be that you could miss your date if you have to wait for the second results (which nearly always seem to come back ok bizarrely).

We fell foul of this last year when we thought we were leaving the EU but didn't, but we ended up moving our trip date to accommodate the re-test.

Just had ours done 1 with completely new first time passport , the other was overdue for booster so had full inoculation , Vet said currently ( until next year) blood test not required. Not cheap but necessary
