I'm sure if you had spoken to the store manager they would have cancelled the fine.. did you do that ?

you can make up plenty of scenarios or stories to try and justify a parking overstay.. and I'm sure many have been tried.. and thrown out .. bottom line is stick to the rules and you don't get fined.. simples.

btw .. our JL doesn't have a ladies or gents fashion department.. only homewares. We browse and have a coffee.. but it's never taken three hours..
I could have done, yes but it was many, many miles away and I didn't know till weeks later that I'd actually overstayed.
You really aren't suggesting that I made it up?

no.. not at all..
when you have a legitimate reason as you described, a word to the store manager either at the time or by letter later with proof of purchasing can usually have it quashed.

That I appreciate, however the 'fine' came through nearly 3 weeks later and who keeps receipts for that length of time unless there's something on there that needs you to keep the receipt as a guarantee?

Just a thought, if you overstay the parking limit in a car park, would your motorhome be liable for being removed from your home by bailiffs as security of the charge/fine. :cautious:

fair point.. I don't keep them either..
you were a victim of a system that was introduced to make car parking available for legitimate Aldi shoppers.
I guess no system is perfect.. the fine was unjust, I would have contested it.

If all parking was regulated by paying as you leave for whatever time you had spent there , on a sliding upward scale if needbe , there would be no argument about overstaying or any need for fines or whatever they call them , but that would be too easy and put all these sharks out of business.

So adding to the cost of shopping everywhere? I might go to 4 or 5 supermarkets on a Saturday.

Parking is generally FREE at supermarket stores and retail parks for the legitimate shoppers .. but was being abused by commuters or others who park up then don't shop but go down town walking.. controls were introduced to stop this.. are you suggesting that we should pay for parking because others are abusing the stores FREE parking ??

Council carparks are generally Pay and Dislplay .. overstay you get a fine..

why call companies sharks who are legitimately employed by the retailer to prevent parking abuse ?

Doubtful as its a fine on the driver/owner not the vehicle.

Could do if they escalate it to high court £60 then the court use high court sheriff's which have a lot more power than bailiffs to recover debt by removing vehicles .

I know a case years ago we're someone owed a major high street bank money and he ignored their demands and just blanked them after years of no money being recovered bank sold the debt to a recovery company that didn't play by the same rules and ignoring them won him two broken arms to give him a reminder .

Bailiffs can include your vehicle in a controlled goods agreement, or they can tow away or clamp it. They can do this if your vehicle is parked at your home or on a public road. But they can't take your vehicle if it's parked on someone else's private land, unless they have a court order allowing this.

Th Americans have a much more laid back attitude, Walmart for example, actually encourage it, they reckon they get a good slice of income, from sales and people using the McDonald's which is in many stores or a Pizza outlet on occasions. Other places which encourage stay-overs are Native American casino`s too. Lot`s of "out of town outlets", certainly turn a blind eye, for the same reasons.

When they took over ASADA, I actually asked the store manager In Hull. Did that mean we could overnight in his car park.?(y) The answer was of course a resounding No!:D2

not surprised, that is due to the law in this country, rather than store policy.
.
Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960 that prohibts camping on your land without planning permission.. , unless they have an exemption certificate issued by Natural England

you may argue that it's parking not camping.. but the last thing a store manager or company need is unofficial camping in their car park.. we all know how hard it is to remove them.. requires court order, so don't blame them.

to be frank, knowing what goes on in big car parks after dark it's the last place i'd want to stay..

A store car park in our area is P&D,but issues two tickets, one for the windscreen and one to reclaim the cost off your shop. 3 hr limit, works well.

My hubby was taken to court by one of these awful car parking thugs. They were claiming for 7 tickets ( business parking on a hotel car park ) . After 2 years of contesting and asking for proof...they ignored most of this...they took him to court wanting £700 in fines. At the last minute ,,,in the court waiting area, they offered to reduce the fine to £600, if he paid then. I can't repeat his reply..I think I would be banned from the forum!
Up shot...the magistrate threw it out because the company had made a mistake in their original letter, which they had failed to rectify despite us asking for more information.

Hubby was in queue, he reckons at least 6 others before him were in court for parking fines.
They aren't afraid to go to court...'you win some, you lose some' seems to be their moto.

Well that`s our 13th year & still loving it.
Why don't we see motorhomes sleeping in supermarket carparks or blocking our high streets rob , is it concern of a charge/fine or is it a respect for the rules/regulations. From what you are suggesting, sleeping in a hospital car park or any other private ground should be fine as long as you bin any communication. Are you sure... Criminal offence or not, you will still have Bailiffs looking for an open door to gain entry.

I guess why we don`t see motorhome parked all night in a carpark or high streets is most of the people that own them prefer to stay on a campsite, why would you park in a street or otherwise?
Yes there is an element that don`t want to use or pay for the campsite but these freeloaders as far as i am concerned should be towed.
But we aren`t talking about motorhomes we are talking about people overstaying the limits posted in in these carparks, for me I would just put barriers on all car parks and if you want to park then you pay end of.

So I`m not suggesting that people park for free I`m just saying that parking isn`t a criminal offence.

I'm sure this would bring a smile to the bailiff's face, I'm told that some of them do have a sense of humor....:)

I’m one of those strange people that will spend an extra 60p or so,to get an extra hour on my ticket at pay and display,”just in case”
For me that saves the worry of maybe being 5 minutes late and having to pay £50 or whatever in fines.
Think...cost/benefit analysis.

I won't be getting you a beer in then.. Until this last year or so I quite frequently parked on streets. It meant I was close to where I wanted to be not in the middle of nowhere and I wasn't prepared to pay rip off £30+ a night fees for campsites that were within a bus ride away. I park legally and take account of nearby residents. Why would you want me to be towed?

PS: I am a fulltimer and site fees over a full year soon add up, especially as I am self sufficient for power etc and don't use facilities in campsites.

On parking tickets. I have only ever had one. And that was in a car park next to a court where I was appearing for a speeding offence

I did recall any pay and display meter so contested it and asked for proof. Turns out a delivery lorry was parked at the back end of the car park and obscured the meter/sign.
I paid up...

Since then I have had neither speeding tickets or car parking tickets :D

As for shopping. If I am in the shop more than 10 minutes, send a search party I have died. I hate shopping. I am in and out of those places as fast as possible. 2 hours free parking is more than enough...

As an ex airline crew member - I took that quite seriously ...
I was onboard two flights which were diverted due to incidents where it was discovered a passenger hadn't packed his own bags ... but I digress...

I only mentioned it because on one occasion, being p****d right off ,I told the truth:LOL:
Just pay up for your overstay in their car park and be more aware next time. The alternative will give you sleepless nights. It is only a hundred quid after all...(y)
That's nearly a months running costs of my house!

Can you afford to pay your parking fines SF:whistle:
No,even when I lived in the Uk I wouldn't pay on principal.

Morrisons North Devon allowed it, as did Asda ,Taunton at one time. You'd be surprised who will allow it.
I also know a Homebase & Tesco that allow it if asked. Or they did when I asked. Also the hospital my wife was in allowed/ & allows MH parking on reduced weekly rate tickets with overnight stay as well.

@scotjimland One supermarket parking in the Atlantic village in north devon allows 90 minutes.
Now if you can do your shopping, in the supermarket, eat breakfast & shop in the rest of the centre shops in that small amount of time you're better than I am.

Just a thought, if you overstay the parking limit in a car park, would your motorhome be liable for being removed from your home by bailiffs as security of the charge/fine. :cautious:
Nothing of mine is touchable by anyone including the police nor will it ever be.

I'm sure this would bring a smile to the bailiff's face, I'm told that some of them do have a sense of humor....:)
It would never get that far:)
