Painting a garage floor

I bought a tin of garage floor paint I think it was from screwfix I think Johnstones do one too. Just looked they have a few. As I doubt many have painted more than one you might struggle for comparitive reviews!!. It certainly makes it easier to sweep out although if the floor surface is too crumbly Im not sure it will work.

My neighbour used a 2 part application,, don't know what, but it's come up like glass.

Johnsons or Leyland is quite good but if you want top notch try these people.

You could always get a quote but I would sit down first!!!!

I used Polycote in my garage where I park the motorhome about five years ago and it has lasted well. I used Johnson floor paint in my workshop, the only traffic being a ride on mower and foot traffic, its been down a couple of years longer but is showing more signs of wear.

There's quite a bit of time and effort involved and if I was doing it again I'd always spend the extra on the Polycote.

If the floor is solid and not crumbling....

Hoover all the dust up and....

A watered down coat of pva sealer to seal.. (About 50% water to 50% pva sealer.).. other wise you will need a few coats as the first couple will soak in like a sponge...

Any recommendations as to regards which paint?
Are we talking about a van garage or a concrete floor garage?

Two pack epoxy paint, for a good job
Also make sure you clean the floor thoroughly. I've done it using Fairy Liquid and a scrubbing brush and then a hose. Then using a two pac.

Garage, house,
I would say epoxy is your best bet if you want a long lasting tough coating. It bonds far better than any paint can that I am aware of?

I was looking into coating for my self build van floor and watched many floor coating videos including garages.

There are loads of good videos on epoxy floor coverings. It is well worth spending a little time watching a few to give yourself some ideas.

Any ideas roughly how much per square metre it'll cost?

Don’t paint a garage floor. It won’t last. Expoxy resin it. That is what you get in the main dealer type workshops.

Just had a 1000 square ft floor professionally done. He ground it with a floor grinder/ vacuum combo. Then 2 coats of epoxy 2 pack. £1200.

Our friend is a plasterer and screeder. He used to do garage work shop floors and he used to trowel granite dust/chipping in to the surface when laying the floor. This was for hard wearing and less dust for when they painted it.

I own a garage, mot station and it sees a lot of vehicles over it on a daily basis, there is only one paint i will use now and its made by Crown and is called "Epimac" it is superb.
We paint the floor once a year and have been using this paint for over 20 years and it with stands everything spilt on it, petrol, diesel, brake fluid etc and DOES NOT PEEL

Ideally you need to put it on a clean concrete floor and 1st coat needs to be thinned down so it has the consistancy of water so is soaks into the concrete to create a great key. Then 2 more coats and your done then it will lool like this

paint is good and gives a good finish in most instances, but it is no comparison to 2 pack epoxy resin

I used to do commercial floor painting for a bit.
Clean the floor with acid first if its new. Then use an epoxy 2 pack paint with a roller on a pole

Wish I'd known it came with those lifts .

I painted my boat hull with two pack epoxy paint and it is as slick as a gob full of snot!

If it's on a floor do you not need to mix in some rough stuff to stop you falling over all the time?

Johnson’s if you want to make it non slip add some sand

Not unless your really old and unstable. Then I suppose you could use those shower sucker mats ?????

Recently visited someone in NZ and the garage floor was carpeted. I expressed surprise, but they looked at me like I was mad. No idea what sort of carpet it was, but they drove the car in with hot engine, etc.

Very slippery if wet and u wear crocks, that’s why the sand

Painted my garage floor soon after we moved into our house in 2006.
Can't remember now what paint I used but it was basic garage floor paint with no special treatment first.
Some of it has lifted and peeled but 90% is still doing it’s job, stopping loads of dust when I sweep it out.
I wouldn’t bother speeding loads on fancy coverings if it’s just a domestic garage.

Richard.
