Seems P and O are pulling the plug since route has been losing money and COVID is final straw. Big disappointment since it was an easy route into Belgium/France for those of us up north. Been using it for many years to avoid the trek down to the channel.

Theres still the Newcastle to Ijmuiden one.

That is a shame

Yes, there is also Hull Rotterdam which is much further south than Ijmuiden but Zeebrugge is only a short drive into northern France or the free Belgian motorways to Luxembourg and then into Eastern France

Zeebrugge definitely more convenient for France but I would still prefer using Hull-Rotterdam than driving to Dover if I was aiming for Eastern France, see a bit of the Netherlands and Germany.

Last time we were on the Hull Zeebrugge boat it was looking rather tired so now we know why they didn’t spend any money on it.
Management used it as a short break with her mate meany times. She said the hotels in Brugge were cheaper than Amsterdam.
After a couple of scary incidents on the M25 recently we said we would use Hull Zeebrugge instead. Our other choice would be Harwich to the Hook of Holland rather than Hull Rotterdam. It will depend on price when we feel safe to return to overseas travels.

Engineering giants tv program documented its last refit

Might have to reopen , If the french start messing about when we leave.

LIke all these things, because there is no (as yet) "set in stone" info. Beyond the statement from the CEO which seemed to confirm it. The rumour mill is grinding hard. One being that the Freight side is saying open with a reduced service. It has the benefit of keeping the berth, link-spans etc;. available.

We used this route last year, found it expensive compared to using Tesco vouchers for the tunnel and the ship had certainly seen better days.

Pride of Brugge has a minor refit in 2017, really refreshed it.

you can’t really compare the tunnel to the hull ferry. especially if you are factoring Tesco Deals into the comparison. You have to spend a lot of money to get the vouchers in the first place. I know, we fuel our fleet at Tesco.

to get to the tunnel takes at least 5 hours from where we live. The record benign 12 hours. Then when you get to the other side, it’s an hour on. I’m tired and need to find somewhere to stop.

Hull is 2 hours. We get in, relax, eat and sleep. Wake up and disembark onto the continent fresh and ready to enjoy the journey ahead.

As for cost , see my post below.

Our only reason for going south for the ferry was cost and a short crossing. Not very logical living less than an hour from Hull but it did mean we were straight into France.
Harwich to the Hook of Holland was slightly cheaper with nice cabins. Last time we used that crossing the A14 from the A1 to just east of Cambridge was chaos with road works. We were having a lot of thinking about travel plans and which ferry or the tunnel but the crisis stopped all plans.
A friend of ours travels to the tunnel during the silly hours of the morning and stays near Calais for the first night.
Having said all of this we have had some good nights on the Hull Rotterdam ferry. Last time we came back that way was after the TT at Assen. The bikers were on the dance floor in clogs. There was a lot of thick heads next morning.

Dependant upon where you live and are going?. ie: I live 12miles north of Hull Docks. And 262 miles from the tunnel. (267 from Dover). Chunnel/Dover only make sense for me IF I am transiting France to Spain. The last 2 times I went to Spain it was more cost effective to take the Santander Ferry. (At 12MPG, the fuel/ferry costs are similar)

Strange is`t it. Now I Loved Driving the "Silly Hours", I often got the overnight trunk jobs. Far less hasle on the roads, and some right "crackpots" on the early hours Radio.

Normally we are heading for southern France.

We'd leave Tyneside about 3am, no traffic on road. Middle of Summer gets light about 4am. Drive down to the tunnel, get maybe an 11am train, arrives France 1pm local, then drive about another 5 hours to a campsite just off the Motorway near Troyes. Early night and back on the road for 7am, into Agde by 1pm, beer consumption starts at 2pm.

Zero cost for tunnel, road tools and fuel usage roughly the same as if going via Zeebrugge.

I like your maths.

I like your maths.
The maths are not the error!. 12MPG was the best average the R-V returned and that was a Trubo diesel! (pusher). The Winnebago was giving 6mpg(US gallons). Thankfully "Gas" was only about $2 a gallon at the time!. I`m a sucker for big Engines, The current is a 3L V6.

We will change to Hull - Rotterdam I think. Our days of very early starts and long miles are over now we have retired and have time to wander. We used a similar format to go to Greece 30 odd years ago: Friday afternoon leave work in West Yorks....Wednesday lunch driving through Thessaloniki to Halkidiki site by 3pm.
West Yorks to Montpelier via Tunnel is about 100 miles longer than using Rotterdam.

I am starting to think the same about the long road trip just to get to the south coast. The idea of 3/4 hr to Hull and a night on the boat to Roterdam may be worth the extra cost. Now we are retired and can travel at times to suit us we might be able to find a cheaper time to travel.
Management had ideas about heading east towards Berlin so it would be better to start via Hull.
We used to come back to the UK from Roterdam when I was stationed in Germany. It was North Sea Ferries then and a better night crossing than Sealink Hook to Harwich and the Townsend Toreson from Ostend.

no, I guessed the 12mpg was correct

I remember doing the calculation. It was the time when even French Diesel was circa 1.3ish euro`s litre and being surprised just how little difference their was. An overnight "cruise" as oposed to 3 days of hacking through a cold and freezing France, all of a sudden became a pleasing prospect!

Living in Hull we are about 20 minutes away from the docks and have never used the ferry, preferring the tunnel for it’s speed and dog friendliness. Just can’t stand the Dartford area when travelling down or up.

Ferry was great we are going to miss it. Cant bear the thought of having to drive down to the tunnel again.
Agreed. Which is why we will use Rotterdam then choose a route south east. I guess we will have more options to see new places; but just hope they keep Hull Rotterdam running.
