Oxfordshire to ban all smoking outside from next month.

Will house prices rise or fall as a result?

No Yooooooman rights for this white working class smoker 🤣
Seriously though various places have advocated drop in centres where heroin users can inject in safety and comfort.
This time last year shops wouldn't challenge people not wearing a mask but when the smoking ban came in we smokers took it on the chin(s).
And, I do stand to be corrected, but I've never seen a report of a driver killing a pedestrian because he was under the influence of (tobacco) smoke.
Final point there is a swell of opinion to legalize drugs like marijuana to nip the criminal elements inthe bud. Stoned drivers are not good drivers.
Sorry smokers rant over I'll crawl back under my rock.

SO

The title of the thread says it WILL happen next month
All the reports say it MAY happen by 2025

Would it not require a law passed in Parliament to ban smoking in public places ?

Yeah, but the detail doesn't matter. Could people imagine what impact this would have on outside seating areas for pubs/cafes?

If it gets pushed through I'd be very surprised.

How are they going to know? Just how? If I for instance decide to walk via a public footpath just over the county border then light a fag how will they know. If they did know as they arrived to tell me off I would just step back over the county border. Obviously I would continue to blow smoke into Oxfordshire 😂😂😂😂.

I think it would stand up to scrutiny if it was outside eating and drinking places as the responsibility will be on the operator to police it.

As long as electronic cigarette smoking is included in the ban then it will bring huge benefits to the counties clean air loving majorities. Well done Oxfordshire. (y)

Vaping. Ug🤬 I just hate those who puff lungs full of chemical stink out into the atmosphere so we can all share it👎👎👎
Especially from a car which then gets into my car following. Clouds of it, looks like the car is on fire. Often tempted to rush over with an extinguisher to save them from the flames😁
Bam vaping too Oxford👍👍

It never ceases to amaze me how they can blow these poison clouds into the air without a single thought on how it is affecting the people around them, but I won't harp on about it. Well done Oxfordshire. ;):giggle:

I am a reformed ex smoker so know how difficult it is to give up! Once you have the real will to do it and your partner is with you all the way then it's possible.

As to Oxfordshire - The concepts of free speech and its a free country seem to be long forgotten.

Was 60 a day Mrs vipar refused to kiss me she said “you stink” so I packed up. But now have a weight problem.

I agree it should be banned completely in E S W vaping as well.

So .... ban smoking in a free county in a free country. What next? The door is open .....

As usual introduce something controversial & put the onus on someone else to police it .Sounds right for council scum.

Yooooooman rights
What about the “Yooooooman rights” of those who don’t like other peoples smoke, even outdoors. I have no objection to people smoking in their homes or in enclosed spaces reserved for them. I have been an ex-smoker for over 40 years but when I was giving up other peoples smoke, whether indoors or outdoors, made the challenge even more difficult. I now find myself holding my breath when I pass a smoker in the street and move tables if someone is smoking in a pub garden. Perhaps having had mouth cancer I am more sensitive about this issue than others but I have “Yooooooman rights” too.

Best stand up fast then. :giggle:

This Broken Link Removed shows a definite, and while small, a statistically significant link for male smokers. Insignificant for females.
.... smoking is considered to increase the risk of car driver’s accidents because smoking during driving distracts the driver, impairing their attention

This was on the radio yesterday it seems that the ban is on areas open to the public like beer gardens etc not on the streets in parks etc the aim is that the areas will be then free from someone lighting up next to you if you're outside eating /drinking and its not just Oxford but other councils as well. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. The council spokesman did say they thought Oxford was being publicised by some of the press trying to make it controversial and a bit of a political football what a surprise!
The Oxford Mail article linked above is pretty balanced the express reported it as

UK pushes nanny state culture as Oxford earmarked to ban smoking outdoors

Nothing like a good rant is there!

Probably about the same percentage as being distracted by the car radio, attractive pedestrian, kamikaze pigeon headed for your screen or many other things.

Now there is more flesh on the bones of the proposal I am not anti it. I would not smoke in an area where folks are eating ever.

Having lived in Oxfordshire for quite a long time I can say that Oxford City Council have long made "interesting " rulings 🙂

As someone who has never smoked l find ex smokers the most moaning about smoking and smokers

Likewise in Leicester where we used to li. But it's democracy we get what the majority voted for.

I don’t like it in car or truck and avoid a confined space of smokers. I don’t think smokers do themselves any favours with the amount of dog ends on the floor where they all stand and smoke, but litter is Uk normal now.
