I'm sure this must have been discussed to death. We look like going from 3500kg to 4250kg.

Whilst in France last year we noticed some towns had 3500kg limits posted, and I think there is a question on motorways ?? is this the same all over Europe ?

Just concerned that as we intend seeing more of Europe will this be a problem ?

If you re still on 4 wheels, its not much of a problem in most countries. Many of the French restrictions have a picture of a truck which means that they don't affect mhs. And many of the restrictions that are there are for places you probably wouldnt be keen to go down anyway.

It tends to be more of a problem in go box countries - Austria and Czech etc.

Since going to 4500kg it makes life so much easier no worries about payload, last trip we came back with about 90kg of wine & beer (for daughters wedding) and still had 530kg of payload left.
If there is a 3.5t restriction there is normally another way around the village, and if you have to go down the restricted road to get to an Aire that is acceptable. Just need to remember to watch your speed as lower limits apply.

On French singe carriageway roads the speed limit is 80kph rather than 90 for below 3500kg. However, every HGV will be 'up your chuff' trying to get you to go faster, around 87kph seems to be their usual speed.
It seems that French HGV drivers have different restrictions to us lesser mortals or don't the gendarmes bother too much with such speeding infringements?

We are at 3650 klg and have never found a problem.

As stated above, if the 3.5t prohibited notice shows a pictogram of a lorry then it doesn't apply to private vehicles like a motorhome. A 3.5t prohibition without the pictogram applies to all vehicles.

On some occasions we have "contravened" the prohibition to reach a specific point. We have never had a problem as it is very difficult, if not impossible, to tell the weight of a m/h just by watching it pass by.

The one limit we always adhere to is for weak bridges.

We uprated from 3500kg to 4250kg last year (no mods needed to our vehicle) and it is much 'nicer' not having to worry about keeping to a lower weight, the disadvantages are that you have the lower speed limits and some (rare) weight limits as previously mentioned and you also need to check out your breakdown/recovery service details as once you go over 3500kg some of the 'benefits' such as free hotel etc accommodation aren't included anymore, probably because it's then more of a 'commercial' recovery.

One main benefit is that road tax is cheaper at £165 pa!(y)

Overall thought we're more than happy to accept the in reality small 'limits' that uprating brings, and enjoy the extra allowance!

I think the limit on single carriageway is 90km/h.

The rear of French >3500kg Mh's have 3 stickers 90, 100 and 110. Surely the 90 has to be single carriageway.

If your MoHo was a previously plated 3500 kg and is say a Peugeot Boxer, is a Gendarme or UK Police likely to check that you are now > 3500 kg ?

Seems to be some confusion over the speed limit on single carriageway roads for over 3.5 ton motorhomes.
I have always understood it to be 80kph rather than 90 for under 3.5 tons.
Anyone have the definitive answer?

Richard.

Fairly cetian it is 80 but never been sure about when the limit goes down to 70 at junctions. As far as I can work out its 60 for trucks but 70 for Motorhomes.

Unlikely unless you have a problem/incident that draws their attention. They re pretty busy trying to sort out other issues ( and getting somewhere nice and quiet for lunch). Seriously we have often found that 12-2 is a great time to travel on the roads in France.

We are 3850 & the SatNav always shows a max of 80kph on single track roads.

A tip from personal experience re changing your V5 logbook when up-plating:

When you apply for a change of Revenue Weight by filling in the blue bit of the V5, there isn't a section where you ask for Maximum Permissable Mass (MPM), see Category F.1 on the form, to be changed too. I'd advise sending a covering letter asking them to change MPM as well. I've just had to send my brand new V5 straight back because they forgot to change the MPM, so I'm currently in legal limbo about how much I can carry.

That's what I was thinking. If it looks like a coachbuilt and is the same size as say a french Challenger or Chausson then I would doubt you/I would encounter probs.
If we/you do, it's our fault.

I've never seen a 'definative' speed limit table for over 3500kg motorhomes.
My satnav for example, does not agree with the C&MC table, but since I'm mever in a hurry, not been an issue so far.

They always do that when I uprated my last van it took them over 4 months to get it right.

Exactly, that gives 90kmh for autoroutes in France, yet according to the C&MC in May this year

'Thank you for your email enquiry regarding the French Speed Limits for Motorhomes over 3.5t using the French AutoRoute network. The information is provided to us by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) who are given the information for government departments, police authorities as well as motoring organisations in each member country. We have confirmed the speed limit information with them and can confirm that the speed limit for the French AutoRoute network for Motorhomes over 3.5t is 110kph.'

If my corrected V5 doesn't turn up in time for our autumn trip abroad it's going to be an official complaint to DVLA, what good that'll do.

If it doesn't turn up in the next couple of weeks I can give you contact who will get it sorted.
