Our October jaunt around France

We changed our loose plan at the last minute as it looked as if we would catch the very worst of the storms due to hit France early this week. Dijon and Beaune will need to wait for another day ...

We made good time down from Ayrshire yesterday so crossed the channel Sat evening rather than Sunday morning.

It is maize harvesting time and there had been some torrential rain so we drove (in the dark) along some pretty sloppy muddy roads to spend our first night at the beautiful village aire at Embry.

Today we have been hotfooting it south ... currently 10km from Carcassonne and ready for a gin and a good night’s kip.

We've stayed on that aire, very pleasant as was Dominique when she came for her money. Montreuil is of course free and better situated after leaving the ferry but it is a viable alternative if you are willing to put your hand in your pocket....

i dont mind putting my hand in my pocket, i just dont like taking money from it lol

seriously, i am not averse to paying for an aire when i need to and usually use the montreuil aire (or car park) and its always reassuring to know there are other options not too far away.

I’d go back partly because it was great value ... immaculate sanitary facilities, lovely view, ‘free’ pick your own herbs and partly because it’s supporting a (in my opinion) worthwhile community venture. I also want to go and try Montreuil when we’re not in a rush and can look round the town ?.

So shockers ... we’re now here, Les Criques de Porteuil at Collioure, using up our 4 free CMC vouchers (cheaper to buy vouchers + ferry than ferry alone, and ferry was £100 cheaper than best online price).

You’re going to miss the first of the storms. Yesterday was exhausting ... I overcame my fear of driving the van so we shared it ... lucky me, Sat Nav chose the banks of the Seine through St Denis and St Cloud in Paris for my leg ??

A bit warmer here plesent 30°.
Stopped at the private Aire outside the town lost all my street cred, having to pay €9.50 inc., EHC & Service & WiFi not been able to get that to work.

We stayed at the free Aire last year and surprised how quiet it was as it’s in a lovely location.

It's a lovely Aire at Embry - one of our favourites. We have used it a number of times - great for the ferry!!

Definitely, we’re liking it here. If you do come then take the miniature tourist ‘train’ from Collioure recommended by a fellow funster ... it sounds really corny but it was well worth it for the views.

Will do .. they advised us to arrive early afternoon ... they’ll show you the free pitches ... we were lucky ... all 3 were ok but the one we chose, has great views.
