After our Spring trip in April, we had to stay out of Schengen areas for 90 days which took is to 25 July. So we booked a crossing on the tunnel for the 28th. Prices for the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam, our preferred mode of getting to France, were too expensive and in any event, there was no space on it on the day or those nearby. Not too disappointed as I’m still reluctant to use P&O after their conduct with their employees.

Our crossing was at 12:50 on the 28th so booked a space at The Doghouse in Smeeth for the 27th and did the boring run down south. Uneventful trip down (apart from a spell of the van acting like a tram on a section of the M11 on which I posted previously). Slept well after a chicken curry and set off for the ferry at 10. Very little traffic until the Tunnel slip road and then it was busy but slow moving. Checked in and boarded on time.

Then drove A29 to Laon where we spent the night on a free motorhome parking with great views. Space for 8 motorhomes but two of the places were taken by cars. A good night’s sleep after a wander around Laon, somewhere we’d seen from a distance many times always promising one day to return.

Then on to Sezanne, Auxerre and stopped at Coullange sur Yonne at a riverside municipal site for €13 with no hook up. Passed a pleasant evening and night there enjoying a burger at the site’s café. We were only 35 miles from the house but we didn’t want to arrive there late in the day. So we arrived at 12:00 on Friday. The garden was wild but luckily the hot dry weather has inhibited plant growth. Picked up a rental car on Friday evening, all surprisingly without hitch. Did a medium shop. Lovely flat peaches. On Saturday, I strimmed the “lawn” then mowed it. Got covered in dust. Now expecting temperatures to rise to mid 30°s over the next week so doing very little.
Later this summer, we will do little tours in the van and then go south to Marseillan Plage or somewhere similar. France is really a lovely place to motorhome.

We fancy Marsellain Plage next year if you go post some pictures.
We’ve lots of pictures from last year so will attach some later. Ot’s lovely there, especially in September, when the heat has gone off.

Did I miss something, why rent a car?
We’re in our house for a month. It is awkward, but not impossible, to shop and have days out in the motorhome. Very narrow roads in this part of rural France. So a car is great for shopping, visits to brocantes etc. An extravagance, I’ll grant you. 🙂
