Hi All
We are off to northern Spain in September via Portsmouth to Santander, we are looking at heading into the Pyrenees mountains for 3 weeks so wanted to know if anyone can recommended places we must go and see during our trip.
Thanks

Where do we start.

Highly underrated and under explored by many.

Try St. Lary Soulan as a starter

Depends what you want to do and expect. The Pyrenees tend to be very down to earth and the people quite robust but friendly and down to earth.

Ainsa is a wonderful old town perched on a hill. Loads of great hikes and cycle routes round there. The river gorges in the area are also brilliant for wild swimming.

Pic Du Midi De Bigorre. An old astronomical observatory at 2870 metres. You travel the last part by cable car. Absolutely lovely view of the mountains and straight down to the valley. Vultures flying around below you.

Both seeing and doing, got electric moutain bikes with full suspension, enjoy walking but dont do and climbing

Gaverne? Do you mean GAVARNIE?
Yes.
Amazing mountain views, including a vertical kilometer waterfall.

I first went there in the early 1980's, no road in, and they had only just got mains electricity.
Donkeys all over the place, as they were the only method of transportation.

Went back in the late 90's, the road and tourism had arrived.
But the views are just as spectacular, even if with a lot more people.

The donkeys are still there, they now transport tourists from the coach park to the centre of the village.

I did a Landrover trip to Andora for a week in the mountains. The villages we visited on route or stopped for lunch were lovely.
Some of the routes were not motorhome friendly but a local with a VW Passat followed us to the top of one of the ski runs.

When looking at local weather forecast for here last night it was scrolling across that Can-fran, Candanchu & Astun had at least 1m of snow with all resorts open. Worth remembering going that way although main roads are usually cleared quickly.

Resurrecting an old thread!

Could anyone who has driven the roads in the mountains in the Pyrenees, especially on the Spanish side, advise on the practicality of taking a large motorhome (7.2m long & 2.4m wide, 3m high)? We’d like to get up into the mountains for hiking, but the roads on the map look rather “interesting”!!! Small, wiggly mountain roads that might not be suitable for a motorhome, so any advice about where we CAN drive to would be much appreciated 😊

Apologies that I can’t help you directly, but can advise that 7m is not a large Motorhome, it’s a medium one! 🤪

jumartoo is best one to advise, their MH is at least that (pictured above).

Carpmart - I’m only a small person so everything looks large to me 😂😂😂

Riverbankannie - thanks!

jumartoo - any advice appreciated 😊

We’re planning on coming over in June - early July from the French side at the East - via Prades. Then travelling west along the Spanish Pyrenees as far as Ordessa (Torla). We’d like to travel up into some of the high valleys that lead to good mountain hikes direct from the site, but looking at the roads on the map we have some concerns about getting our motorhome up there! Any knowledge about which ones are easier to access than others would be much appreciated.

Google maps is your friend. Any route you decide to drive can be zoomed in to. If the road had white lines, especially down the centre, you're good to go!

We're hoping that in mid June the weather will be cool enough for us to have a Pyrenean trip ourselves. Ordesa is lovely but, unfortunately lots of others have now found it. Mid June should be a better, less busy, time to go. Agiüestortes is well worth a trip. You'd need to park either side of the park and, either walk up to the lakes, or take a 4x4 taxi to go hiking higher.

If you want remote have a look at Camping Zuriza which is near the end of the road after driving through Anso. The road there isn't too narrow but be prepared to reverse if you meet oncoming traffic.
