We’ve booked another short break just 2 nights, the site looks really good.

Has anyone stayed here before? Looks quite a dog friendly area we will have our 2 with us.

Will update this with our thoughts for others interested.

Looks like its come on a bit since I was last there 35 or 40 years ago ;) used to go canoeing there and pitch tents.

Stayed there about ten years ago on a flying visit to Durham...

Was nice then and some lovely walks...

Looks the business now... all laid out properly.. (y)

When I was at Durham (HMP) that used to be the place that the residents (cons) families used to stop at if they were from out of the area👮‍♂️

I don't know the site but the surrounding areas are beautiful. Bearish Museum (if open) is not far away and well worth a look.

Its has changed out of all recognition from when I was last there. Camped there in 1981 and it was just a piece of grass to pitch the tent.

Does it still cost 1p to cross the footbridge?

All nice to hear! We went to Beamish a few years ago but might go back, it’s great.

Yes twice :-) Is lovely and if it is the same guy he is very helpful and friendly . When we took our 17 French motorhome club vans in 2017 out first and last night was there . Enjoy :-) We did !

WE were there at Christmas and liked it a lot!

Stayed for a couple of nights last summer, lovely location, friendly, nothing special but good value.
Couple of good taxi drivers worth knowing about to get you back from Durham after a long day up and down hill.
Enjoy, we did

We have stayed there when we had the other van.Lovely site overlooking the ruins. Nice walks along the river.
Maybe just our bad luck but the pitch we were on sloped quite a bit. At the time we hadn’t thought of buying levelling ramps.

We stayed there about 4 years ago and our pitch was that much of a slope I used 2 sets of levellers
on top of one another and still couldn't get level, also I needed 25m hook up cable to reach electric
point.

Yes, they do have some motorhome pitches which are hard standing and flat, but the only one they had left was right opposite the ‘poo shute’ so I went for a touring pitch.

Because of Covid we’ve been given 2 pitches together, apparently they are flat but will have to wait and see! 👍

First morning; we slept on a slope again, the pitches we were assigned (everybody gets 2 due to social distancing) had been taken by 2 caravans that were together.
I ordered some better ramps and they arrived about an hour after we’d left home!

The site is lovely, such a nice place and very quiet. Some MH pitches look really good as they are staged and pretty much everyone has a good view of the Abbey. The river is a minutes walk away and the weather today is great 😎

Water here is available only from a tap by the toilet block so we have to drive over to fill up. Not sure what we’ll do with our grey water yet, our van has a driveover release valve and no space for a wastemaster 😱

We found a great pit stop at Hardwick Country Park, nice walks free parking and a grassy dog exercise area that we used to pen in our 2 whilst making a drink 🙂 photos below
Near Stockton-on-Tees

I’ll take photos of the site today

How much per night is it please?
£25 per night 2 nights minimum I believe. Moved to a flat pitch now, much better. We’ve just been for a walk around the Abbey and along the river 👍

It’s a farm so there are pigs in a field down the river, and chickens etc running free on the site. Dogs must be on leads according to the signs but it’s only ours that are actually on a lead 🙄

Still, nice place would come again

We used to take part in the annual canoe / kayak race from Durham down to Finchale. Martin won in an open Canadian Canoe one year, our daughter won the Ladies Race, other daughter was the youngest competitor and I just paddled for the fun of it (no category for sit-on kayaks at that time).

The finish line was the bridge and there were lots of red faces by people who tried to take a short cut and ended up grounded on the rocks just before the bridge in full view of the spectators :)
