Getting Better
we’re thinking of cancelling our ever increasing sky package and fed up of getting it down every year, I’ve looked at a Now TV box as Sharp wants sky Atlantic and fox which are on the Now package, comes with box/router for £29.98 which includes line rental and fast fibre unlimited broadband....

This is for home use only

Anyone else have any experience of this... thanks

I don't have the box, but I have the Now TV app on a media system at home and on my laptop when in the van.

The Windows app works really well and the stream is always good. Useful to be able to buy a pass here and there if there's a sports event on etc.

Using Nowtv on the tablet while in Spain, bought a one week pass for £10.99 last weekend to watch the F1, have to use it though a VPN otherwise it would not work.

We have used the Now TV app/channel via a Roku 3 box, it worked pretty well as you can dip in/out as content interests you (good for selective Sky Sports viewing for example)

I might add that this is per month and No contract....

The price of that seems very good if you get a reasonable amount of data along with the line rental compared to other providers.

Edit just seen unlimited data

Yes, that bit I like, the dipping in and out... we could not have stuff while we’re away for a few months saving even more..(y)

We dumped sky tv after years of not really watching it and paying for full package plus HD plus remote etc, now have NOW tv, entertainment package at £7 or so a month for box sets and Prime at £80 for the year for films, includes free next day deliveries. Now tv enables us to buy day passes for sky sports or box office events. Never looked back, we think it's a great solution for our needs

We have just gone from NowTV to Sky Q. Whilst the now box was ok, we could not record programs so had a standalone free sat box with it. Still meant that there were some programs we couldn't get but it is a case of what are the compromises you are willing to make. (Sounds like getting a MH !).

Just wish we could get Virgin Media in our area and we'd have given them a try.

The only issue I had with Sky Now was the fact you only get picture with a max of 720p not full HD.

The original VM TiVo box was a dog, but had some nice features for recording programs of interest in addition to regular ‘series links’ which Sky lack (e.g by using multiple keywords and inclusive/exclusive logic etc). Not sure what the new V6 box is like by comparison, but the UI seems pretty much the same as the old.

If you use the UHD content on Sky Q I don’t think you will currently get that on VM, I think the only content in that format comes from third party apps such as Netflix hosted on the VM platform.

Also, no Sky Atlantic on VM, if that channel content is of interest/importance to you.

Outside of that, based purely on cost, VM do offer some competitively priced TV and BB bundles.

We’re currently on Sky Q and approaching the end of contracted period, hence starting to contemplate options...

We just swapped back to Virgin from Sky after they refused to negotiate lol ,because Virgin were doing a good deal on the full package including Sky movies and 200 meg broad band on a 12 month contract, the new V6 box is much better then the old Tivo records 5 programs while you watch a 6th ( if you can find that much to watch) still has good logic and if you start to watch a series after it has started it find and records the previous episodes from catch up. and it has Netflix built in if you have a subscription.

Were you on Sky Q? I’m curious because I am on the cusp of the negotiation outreach to Sky and attempting to play them off against VM options. On the Sky Q forum several people report Sky giving between 18% and 30% discounts, but obviously there is no guarantee of such (may be pot luck who you get through to).

Th last time I moved from Sky to Virgin they initially refused to negotiate, I then signed up to VM only to receive emails and letters from Sky saying “please stay” or similar. Stupid thing being those late communications offered a discount which would have retained my custom.

No just the standard Sky HD the last 2 years they negotiated and I got 50% off this year they declined until after I had signed to Virgin their loss.

Plusnet are doing phone line and fast unlimited fibre for £24.99
Now tv box you can pick up anywhere from as little as £10 one off..

Be aware that they way they advertise the channels like "thousands of box sets" does incure more charges so just double check on what you are getting.. Not sure how it works with Sky Atlantic..

Just looked... Sky Atlantic is on the Entertainment package, £28 for 6 months..
So you need to find out if thats included in your £29..

As there's not much in the way of good stuff on TV anymore I binned the lot and just use an app called PLEX. I can watch movies (as they are released), complete TV series (within hours of airing) etc. Simple to set up, If your interested PM me for details of how.

I intend to use a freesat box with it too, I know you can’t record on the Now box but could you not do catchup or on demand and watch what you missed...?

The "now box" is a Roku box branded under sky! - The Roku box also has app for access sky, but many others as well. They have just released a 4K version if your TV is up to it, but there are not as of yet many 4K channels to watch, but movies tv shows etc look outstanding in 4K

Now TV box + 2 months' entertainment package for less than £11.

Does that include the Sky sports channels ? If so a very good deal.
Like others, we sometimes buy a Now pass for a particular sporting event.

ps I think Now is owned by Sky ?

Now is part of Sky so if you get a Now box you can't load Prime onto it. Better to get n Android TV box so you can load any apps you want.

Yup.... now have a fire stick with various apps on it and can watch anything and I mean anything for absolutely nothing.... well except for the electric to work the tv..?
