Does anyone have any figures on how much it cost to run a 40amp B/B battery charger?

I very much doubt you would notice the difference.

The benefits of a B2B doing its job would far outweigh the very small cost in fuel usage.
I have never noted any signs of our engine labouring under the load imposed when our B2B is charging.

Some rough figures. 140Hp is about 140 x 746 = 10440 watts. 60A B2B takes about 60 x 14 = 840W. So an increase of about 8% (100 x 840 / 10440). The engine is not often at full power, so probably double that as a percentage.

Edit: sorry, got it wrong first time, now corrected.

It'll be a lot less than the aircon as the engine is driving a pump - just yesterday as I was idling the engine the aircon kicked in and the engine revs dropped.
However the alternator is already spinning so the increased resistance due to the extra output, although likely measurable with the right equipment, is really too small to be noticeable.

You could also wonder if a B2B puts an extra strain on the alternator, causing premature failure. I did suspect this as shortly after I had the B2B fitted the alternator failed. But it must have already been on the way out because it's identical replacement is still going strong after over 100,000 miles!
