Beautiful area - sites not always great, but try the ACSI one at Entre-Ambos-et-Rios. Not sure what effect the wildfires have had, though. Get the Guia Roteiro campsite guide - direct from many sites or from Vicarious Books in advance. Discount pays for book quickly.

We have ACSI and I'll try and pick up the other when we arrive..

Try the area between Arganil and Oliveira do Hospital. Campsite at Arganil, another at Coja, and one at Pont de Tres Entradas, there are others, also quite a few free Aires. Beautiful area near Avo and Barril de Alva, weather should be lovely too. The aire at Barril de Alva is free, right near the river with swimming beach. You can have electric for one euro per night from the excellent restaurant right on its doorstep. Give us a shout if you venture that way, we should be in the area too around then. Kettle is always on, or wine in the fridge.

After entering a few nights on the Aire in Braganca (free and well recommended) we intended doing some mileage but finished up at the Albufiera do Azibo not far down the A4, E82, IP4 Take your pick.

When we arrived, there were two locals in 'vans who advised me as to the 'Not Camping, but Parked' rule that covers Portugal.
ie no NOTHING outside the 'van, no step, no windows to side elevation open, no awning, NOTHING (get the picture) If you're there with nowt hanging out,:blusher::blusher::blusher::blusher: then the GNR (Police) will leave you alone. Usually?

We were at Barril de Alva a couple of weeks back - great aire with brilliant value restaurant next to it. But I'd hesitate to swim there - smelled distinctly stagnant, and looked like sewage outflow going in under the bridge. I'm not normally over-cautious but really wouldn't have fancied swimming there!

In Alvor, and got my windows open.......

Are you the parked behind the aire if so beware the vans there recently several times were moved on by the police with registration numbers taken etc , also the exit has been shut off with only the entry is via the no autocaravanas sign ... but the aire from the 1st October cost is 4.50 € reduced from 7€ a nite..a very affordable price

Thanks for your concern Kath, but no we are in the official aire we have been here before by car when staying elsewhere, whilst it is a nice position the sand/dust blasts with only a force 4 wind are quite intrusive, heaven knows what its like in a gale? So we will just stay 2 nights and move on up to Silves.
