Just booked ferry to Santandair planning to work our way to south coast (Mar Menor) Madrid looks a nightmare on the map should we avoid it or not.
Also searchforsites not showing a lot of choices for an overnight.

No need to go anywhere near Madrid! Plenty of other interesting ways down to the south!

Try Palencia, Valladolid, Salamanca, Plasencia, Cacares then Seville. Maybe visit Avila if you get a chance!

We sort of went straight through the middle on a dual carriageway, then stopped overnight at Aranjuez where we enjoyed a visit around the palace which has a lot of copies of the Madrid Palace and saved us visiting the real thing.

That's a long way around.

Like going to Dover from Manchester via Bristol!

Have done that trip many times and usually we took the M50 off the A1 and then either the R3 which has a small toll charge, this then joins the A3. If you don’t wish to pay the toll then carry on around the M50 until you reach the A3. There will be a bit of traffic if early morning but that disappears quite quickly.
We stopped at Camping Riaza which is around 40 miles north of Madrid and it’s then an easy days drive to La Manga.

We go that way every year via Madrid to the Mar Menor it’s simple enough route to follow
M50 , R2 M50, R3/A3
south to Tarancon , Albacete , Murcia

We overnight at www.picodelamiel.com

Heading that way on the 15th Jan when we dock at Santander

Maybe but most of the towns have stunning points of interest!

Madrid has excellent ring road. I doubt you will drive below 50mph at any point. Do not miss turnings off as we once did, it took ages to get back on route.

Another very important factor is When...if you are planning a winter trip. Then you wouldn't want too many stopovers...the road network is very efficient, even simpler by using confidently your SatNav...Roads kept clear of snow by a very efficient clearing team....Par4Night would be my choice..

We stopped at Medinacelli, Castillo de Garciemunez, Chinchilla de Montearagon, then IKEA in Murcia. All free aires. We don’t like motorways but in the depths of winter we went via Madrid.

We are parked up at Medinacelli right now...it's was 2°c last night...been here before in motorhome and whilst cycling to Valencia..

We recently went up through Madrid, set sat nav to no tolls and it went via M50. Stop in Segovia its stunning and a nice free aire at the bull ring.

If you avoid Friday evenings you should be ok. Been their done that and survived to tell the tale. Italian drivers can be a bit cranky when getting away from the city for the weekend.

.............Italian ???? Methinks your sat nav needs an update ;)
Oh dear Sagalout how could I mix up Madrid with Milan it was of course Milan on a Friday night best avoided.
Memo to self, Must pay more attention to detail.;)

Not if you are going to Tarifa or cape Trafalgar, Donana? Lovely areas of Spain😊

The M25 in the UK is far more daunting than any of the Madrid orbital motorways of which there are many....starting from an inner ring M30..very inner..... till the M50 which is a very outer motorway ring road..coming no-way near the Capital..

I agree.
But the OP wasn't going anywhere near there.
He's /She's going to Mar Menor! :giggle:

Don’t avoid it, have a few days there, excellent Motorhome larking area, train to city centre very cheap, Alhambra Palace Prada Museum, and lots more. What’s not to like?

Can’t really recommend any free camping spots but there are plenty of campsites both on the coast and inland to choose from
We’re away to the CAMC winter rally at La Manga
Not everyone’s choice but the long stay rate at £12 a night is ok
Leccy included
