Just back from a 10 day whizz round the NC500. Went anti-clockwise from Inverness and took a few iPhone snaps along the way (from Dunnet beach onwards). Truly incredible scenery and I even managed to find some elusive October sunshine!

Lovely pictures thanks, glad you enjoyed it, there are certainly stunning views in just about any direction you care to look. :D
You seem to have got the weather right too- I received a text from a friend living just outside Beauly last night- it was -5°c . Brr
It was 15°c here in my part of inland Andalusia.

Brilliant photos ... October’s often a good time to head up there.
Loving Torridon and Applecross photos but loads more I’d like to visit.

Hi. Just planning to do the route next summer. Thinking about 7 days and playing a bit of golf. Any tips on itinerary?

Great pics. But don’t believe you drank the tennants ?

Recommend downloading the North Coast 500 App from the App Store. It’s fab. Within it you can tick interest checklists & the app will then build you a bespoke tour/ guides subject to what your interested in doing ie Beaches & Bays, Whiskey, Sport interests etc, etc. There is also a rough guide book to the NC500 that you may find interesting. ?

Avoid June, July and August! And the NC500! It's becoming a victim of it's own popularity. (You'll also avoid the midges too.)

We've visited Scotland at all times of the year and found it beautiful in Spring and Autumn - although remember you don't go to Scotland for the weather!

Makes me want to do it, did Scotland loop on my motorcycle a few years back.
Can’t wait to try it in the camper.
Great pics.??

Thinking of doing at least some of the NC500 next year but my beloved and me to a lesser extent are not too keen on mountains and sheer drops, that plus the single track roads is putting us off.
Applecross sounds and looks wonderful but looking at the pass from above is scary, is it really as bad as it looks, especially some of the hairpins?
One factor in our favour is that we shall probably have a PVC by then, narrower and shorter that our current van, will that help!

I did Applecross Pass in a snow storm a few years ago in a hymer a class.
Lived to tell the tale but must admit to not really appreciating how steep and high it was when I set off, although in my defence, it was a clear blue sky when I left.
Fortunately I followed a snowplough / gritter a few minutes ahead of me but that was completely unplanned.
I like to do it again in better weather.

Applecross section is not as bad as it looks. If you’ve done the Pyrénées/ Gorges Du Verdon it’s not as extreme as over there - sheer drop wise, albeit I wouldn’t want to do it (or any of the route) in icy conditions or during peak holiday dates. There were plenty of larger motorhomes going through the Applecross section before and after me and there is an alternative route if you want to miss that part (as mentioned before download the NC500 app/ guide. It’s brilliant! ) Although the NC500 is single track near Applecross and through lots of other sections, there are plenty of passing places and you generally have ample forward vision to be able to plan & anticipate without any dramas.

Some great photos

NC500 is on our wish list for earlier next year before it gets mental and midges start. Girlfriend wants to do Isle of skye etc. Planned to go last month but was too busy

Hopefully not too many big drops as remember when we accidentally went over Rhinos Pass in Lake district  and she wanted to jump out :D and that was with our smaller campervan

Locals/ Campsite staff were saying May is a really good time to go - to avoid peak humans/ midges! ??

May and September/October would be my choice.
Applecross pass is doable certainly in PVC - there are passing spaces so keep looking ahead to see what’s coming. It is narrow in parts with disintegrating road edges but there has been some work to repair these recently.
To be honest we usually go the coast toad from Shieldaig ... we only do the pass when we have visitors.
This was one day I was glad we did it ...

Mars with snow

Thanks, reckon we'll try for late April-May. Wouldn't attempt June-Aug with Midge tales I've heard.

NC500 is one of those routes I wished we owned a PVC instead. But she just HAD to have that U shaped lounge :D

Hi - wondering if you could advise which app you downloaded? I can see two apps on the apple app store.

Am planning on doing this route (by motorbike) this summer so in the planning stages and looking for useful info.

Many thanks,

Andy

Swine!.. another to add to the list. We only heard of the NC500 this year

We intend to do the nc500 in September all things permitting
How is it with wild camping around there
Was told a lot more relaxed about it north of the border

@Worzelwagon2 Well, it was relaxed before this cv19 business but from all accounts its becoming more difficult due to locals
complaining and abusing peeps with motorhomers. Best of luck. (y)

I think NC500 is going to be very busy this year with possible problems of going abroad
Probably not as busy as Cornwall though
