NO OVEN IN MOTOTHOME

We had an oven in our first two MH which I recall only using the oven to warm up the croissants. In our latest van we don't have an oven. We use a double skillet pan to warm our cossiants and I have even done a roast in it. Far more practical and easier to keep clean.

We have a full oven in our PVC and use it all the time. Cant understand these german MHs with just 3 rings.
... our 'German' has only got 2 rings ... we are at the 'paupers' end of the spectrum! :(

At home I have usually been accustomed to an oven and cannot imagine not being able to cook a 'Roast' - Chicken, piece of beef etc. Pizza? on a frying pan?
You can definitely cook pizza in a frying pan, we use one for ours, all we do in addition to this is use a small blow torch to 'brown' the top, works a treat.

I am of the opinion of if you like your food insipid looking and undercooked you dont need an oven :cautious:
My wife and I have always been used to proper home cooked food and we both really enjoy cooking so cooking in the van is all part of the enjoyment for us , I am over 70 and in my life I have had 1 macdonalds ,1 kentucky and 1 pizza , the only other fast food I have had is fish and chips , yep I am a grumpy old-fashioned geezer;);)
I also like good food made from scratch but find it no problem without an oven . Don’t really use the oven in the house either except for baking .

I think this discussion would benefit from being broken down between those who use EHU and those who do not.

No EHU - no microwave, no Remoska.

Understand your point.. however,

we generally use sites with EHU and while there are electric substitutes for a gas oven, none come close.

So whether on EHU or not Gas rules

Rest May Case on Gas Mk 5..

Jim, a site loving tosser :xgrin:

Have you checked your insurance policy?
We once had a 5ft blow torch in a MH but that was NOT intentional ... although it did make some of the interior a bit crispy! :D

I miss the oven I've had in some vans. It was a really handy place to store the dog food and bread.

My present van has full oven, but only use to reheat meals or warm bread all of which can be done in Remoska which I have, van we are thinking of getting has no oven, so it boils down down to me, if I can live without one, this raies another question, or two, how much does not having an oven detract when selling van? And am I paying over the odds for van without oven.

Phew, for a minute some funsters might have thought you originally meant roasting a sausage dog! :D

My wife is a brilliant cook ( and also used to have a restaurant), there is no way would she consider a van without an oven. We enjoy the same tasty food home or away.

Ever since lighting was by Calor gas.
I hate eating in a room full of others scoffing food with cutlery that hundreds of others have used.. Food was mediocre, I could cook a better curry, I doubt it was freshly prepared using fresh spices and ingredients, I didn't enjoy it. It was also too busy, too noisy and way overpriced...

So we very rarely eat out,.
I can see why.
I don't suppose you get many invitations.

I think this discussion would benefit from being broken down between those who use EHU and those who do not.

No EHU - no microwave, no Remoska.

Also 'Oven' usually includes a 'Grill'

At home I have usually been accustomed to an oven and cannot imagine not being able to cook a 'Roast' - Chicken, piece of beef etc. Pizza? on a frying pan?

Also, with the grill - doing lamb chops. Fried in a pan is not the same.

We have an oven at home, but Basia rarely used it except for baking. Then I started teaching her, and then got up to convincing her I could cook Christmas Turkey for 9 - they loved it.

I rest my case - on Regulator 5.

Geoff
If not using EHU, you could try an Omnia.
Not cheap, for what they are, but they are light and compact.

We hardly ever eat out, I am brilliant cook too, my home is an on going restaurant for my hubby, no fry ups here though, plus I am gluten free, so anything out is expensive.

the point is you can happily live without an oven . i never had one in any of my earlier vw campers just two burners and a grill. while in africa boiled water in a volcano kettle and cooked many things on the little fire used for the kettle.
for the last 18 yrs i have a full ovencooker in my trailer . ,yes great for honey roast gammon joints at xmas and spuds and veg cooked in an old pimple topped enamel cooking dish in the oven. or baking lovely bread etc .
but they best thing is the deep freeze powered by solar. its like being in lost in space when way out in the sahara desert etc we can have homemade icecream or lolly pops.
but even those you can live without. if you havnt got the freezer.
there is loads of fun to be had in the wilds.

Perhaps we should exclude the word “home” from the description of our motors? It seems to encourage folk to try and replicate everything they have at home whilst on the move. We use ours to escape the hum-drum routine of life and discover something new. We don’t slum it but it does help to break the monotony by doing things differently.

Back to the original question: the easy way to decide whether an oven is needed is to look back on it's past use. If you haven't used it you certainly don't need it. If you have used it very occasionally but could have used a different appliance you already carry you still don't need it. If you use it at least once each week you're away and prefer to cook in the oven then you do need one.

My better half cooks 90% of our meals at home from scratch. When we're away in the van that proportion drops to around 50% given that some meals are convenience food and some are eaten out. We have never used the van oven and use the various cooker top aids instead. A lot of van ovens are poor and, regardless, require familiarisation by using them regularly. Which doesn't really happen in our case so this time I've removed the oven & replaced it with a combination microwave of the same size. In the last van we had both gas oven (unused) and a microwave. We use a mix of CL / CS' rallies, and Cub sites so EHU is not always available. I may in future consider a large inverter for the microwave but so far haven't felt the need.

Wanting an oven in a motorhome seem to be a British thing. Few continental registered motorhomes have them, and they still manage to survive. As I say we have one, but would not worry too much if we didn't. Certainly not on our "must have" or even "would prefer" lists.

I can't seem to find any mention of Fray Bentos in this thread. :xsurprised:
