First trip in very hot weather and we are thinking that a fan would be a good idea for when we are on hook up.

Can't imagine 12v is a goer as would probably quickly drain battery.

A quick Google gives lots of options (as always) so was wondering how others had resolved this.

Not sure if it’s a direction you wish to go in.
But
We were very very very with our Maxxfan that I fitted just before this years holiday. Worked really well and was used every night, all night, as well as other times.

Look for a square fan that fits in your roof. I modified one by cutting the feet off and making it lock into the skylight and it is great at night bringing lots of cooler night air in.

Have a Fantastic Fan for one rooflight draws less than 1 amp on low and only 1.5 amps flat out, also have a Fiamma Turbo vent clipped into the main rooflight again low current on 12v.
Try to avoid mains powered equipment in the van as we rarely use EHU.

As you ask about a mains fan I assume it's for use when on hook up. If that's the case you could just as well use a 12v fan because the hook up will look after any battery drain. However 12v has the advantage that you can use it when off hook up. And as stated above it won't drain the battery anyway.

We use a bog standard 240v 16" floor standing fan off an inverter. Conveniently only need to use it when the sun is shining and solar is giving leccy away for free 😀

240v
Is that a 12v or 240v fan Richard and Ann ?
240v mains, uses about 2 amps in total with the inverter, I'd only leave it on all night if we had EHU. Lately we've just had it on during the day (plenty solar here 😎👌) and have it in the window.

I made a 12v one to have on all night, uses less than 1 amp on low...

It's 4 computer fans, PWM speed control, mozzie guards and thermostat that switches it off if it gets cold during the night 👍

I fitted a massive 240mm computer case fan in a piece of perspex in my rear skylight powered off of 12v and a speed controller. Hardly registers on the solar amp metre, and on slow is virtually silent.
I have it to suck out the hot air but I may turn it around as I think it might be pulling the hot air in from the bigger forward skylight.
The rear skylight is shaded by the solar panel.

Agreed we love our Maxxfan delux, you don’t need a/c in uk

If you run all 4 you can leave out the mozzie guards, none come in and even if they did the little fast blades will kill them 👍

it’s thermostatically controlled (3 deg differential) so will switch off as the night cools
I didn’t bother with speed control because it was thermostatically controlled (probes in the centre)
that’s why I fitted mossie mesh 🥺

Speaking of computer fans how do you wire up a 3 wire harness into 12v wiring?

Cheers James

You only use 2, one of them is usually a speed sensor(sometimes yellow) . The wire colours vary, I don't think you can damage them if you get it wrong.

We use a simple 230v desk fan, only a few euros from a supermarket in Portugal a couple of years ago, almost silent, gives a good breeze and only uses a few watts so can be run off the small inverter we have so no problem if not on hook up.

We use a Fantastic roof light (12V).
Find them best on extraction, to rid the hot air and any remaining cooking smells from the van.
You may find that you have a vent already pre-wired by the manufacturer.

1598436710874.jpegI bought 4 of theses little whizzes. They are rechargeable with 5000ma batteries and amazingly effective. Replaced 2 12” 240v fans which were too cumbersome for the van. Two of these in the cab areaand two in the bedroom. £13.99 each. Not aircon but we survived 35c a couple of times with these and the roof extractor.

Great for the dog too, just clip them on a door handle, panel or shelf and angle any which way. Kept the lad super cool!

Normally, I find leaving Windows/roof lights open enough
But on those really hot days, I found 'air coolers' work a treat, like the chillmax air by JML (tho a little loud)
There are plenty available on eBay

Rather than fit in a roof light (leave them open & it rains & everything gets wet) we purchased a second hand Truma in-line heating blower and fitted it under the bunk. The benefit is we can leave it on low all night or on high as & when needed. It draws very little power, sucks outside air through the floor & is very very quiet. Total cost, about £30!
