What does this mean ?

Proof of the economic, professional or social interests

Thanks in advance

An NIE number is compulsory legal requirement in Spain to enter into any kind of “contract”
Buying a house
Having a bank account
Mobile phone contract
HP on a car
Etc

Thanks
But specifically what does “Proof of the economic, professional or social interests” mean

The NIE number is the National Identification number for Extranjeros (foreigners) and as said above is needed to make many purchases in Spain.

It says "Retired" on mine.

We are applying on line and amongst other thing it is is asking for

Proof of the economic, professional or social interests

What does this refer to.

I know what a NIE is.

There are 3 variations : Número Identificado (Identifying number) Extranjero (foreigner) - NIE. Número identificado Fiscal (fiscal) - NIF and Código Identificado (Inentifying Code) Fiscal - CIF.
The NIF is the personal Identificstion number for nationals - equivalent to the UK National Insurance Number, Passport Number and Tax Number if they were one and the same. The NIE is the same, apart from not being your passport no, but for foreigners. The CIF is the equivalent for a company, and is basically the same as the UK Vat number combined with Tax Reference.
It's actually a really good system, as it eliminates duplicated data over diferentent gov systems (pension, health care, passport, tax, etc) asthey all run off the same number.

If that's section 4.2.2 on the application form I suspect that they're just asking why you want the number. See

It is the time factor that is making us go via the Edinburgh Consul as it takes 6 or 7 weeks in Spain according to our estate agent and advisor so it is quicker to apply online and get an appointment and have all forms filled in and get the NIE in 3 weeks. They said it used to be so simple and just go the the police station but not so easy now.

We are looking at the same application process (next year) but since 2012 the Spanish Govt has stipulated that foreigners may need to provide proof of wealth/income/earnings/health insurance etc. I think this is all connected to the issue and receipt of an NIE.

I wait to be corrected though.

The new regulations are for people signing on the register of foreigners living in Spain (known incorrectly as Residencia), where you have to prove health cover and sufficient income to support yourselves.

As far as I know just getting a NIE number is still the same and costs €10.71

Are you going for your residency ?
The one thing we have learnt in Spain is, for what they charge pay someone to do it for you, ;) nothing is a problem and it all goes smoothly.
Be it NIE / Residency or importing a Vehicle in fact ours save us €880 on the tax making sure our paperwork was correct before leaving germany.

Is it possible to do ANYTHING in Spain in 3 weeks? That's only 42 sleeps....

Normally, in Lorca National Police anyway, the NIE takes a week.

One visit to take the, paid for at the bank, form and another visit the week after to collect the number.

"Residencia", including NIE, is done there and then!!! Don't ask me why!

Other regions may differ!

As above , what Judith said. Apply in person maximum of 14 days .
Also Agencies, gestorias ,etc; are banned from applying during the summer months due to staff vacations ,etc; so if you need one desperately applications in person are the only way.

The rules all vary on Monday,Tuesday Wednesday,Thursday,Friday and depending on who you speak to when you take the wrong forms back (n)
