Well, it is a bit of a mine field and a lot of research is needed. The people on here have a lot of insight and knowledge......... you could always try calling an insurance company......

Maybe as motorhome owners we don’t have too much experience but at least people did try to help..... notwithstanding an absolutely charming attitude from the OP

Most owners on here use their motorhomes for their own pleasure, very few would be wanting to rent them out, including me.

I have spoken in the past to someone who rented out 3/4 motorhomes as a small business, and some of the stories he told made my hair stand on end. According to him, hirers will not treat your motorhome as you would like to think they would, which partly explains the very high rental charges.

I would suggest you either go through a company who pays you to rent out your MoHo and/or do a lot of research as you would in due diligence when setting up a business.

You can’t expect members here to do that for you in what is essentially a motorhome chatroom.

A friend did hire his out via a company who took the bookings and arranged insurance etc. I can't remember the name of the company but some internet research should find them, there may be more than one.. He made quite good money from it but it wasn't kept in as good condition as when it was just him using it so be prepared...

many many years! since I was a kid
some people dont want help, they cant think for themselves

if renting out your own motorhome was easy, cost effective and didnt destroy the vehicle, loads of people would do it

These people always amaze me that they think it is so easy just to rent out a MH. So what would they do if it comes back in urgent need of repairs and it's rented out the following week to a family for a holiday. I would imagine they would just ring them up and tell them the holiday is cancelled its as simple as that. Except that the guy who rented it has paid for campsites and a ferry and is not very happy. Neither is his holiday insurance company who then start proceeding to reclaim the cost of the lost holiday.

It probably is a troll and a very unpleasant one at that

Hiring out your motorhome would inevitably negate any warranty on the new vehicle which was supplied for owner use and non commercial use.

You'd need specialist insurance as normal policies exclude use for hire.

What about breakdown cover, again on a commercial basis?

If something goes wrong with the vehicle whilst it's on hire, or between hire, have you got resources for a prompt fix?

Should you fit a tracker - regardless of privacy of the hirer.

Who cleans the van out at the end of each hire? Your hirer won't do it to the standard your next customer expects.

What about speeding and other tickets?

Your servicing requirements will increase, and thus wear and tear on the van. It will loose value faster having been hired and no doubt higher mileage. After a couple of years will it be too old and too scruffy to hire?

Will your hirer respect your vehicle? Two weeks after getting my MH I'm still trying to work out how to best use some of it's kit. And I'm taking care to minimise damage. Will your hirer?

The toys you want on it for your use will be too much of a risk and too complex for your hirer.

How do you prioritise the time you want with the van compared to that of your hirers?

I can think of loads of potential reasons why not to do this, and from the swift negativity of the OP would dread to want to hire from someone who it seems is expectant to do little other than make a fast buck.

I'm a relative newbie as well and did consider, very briefly, the renting out option, it was quickly dismissed after some initial research.

If your going to rent, rent. Buy it specifically for that purpose and treat it is a business, just like a flat/house. If you develop an emotional attachment to something then hand it over to a perfect stranger it is at best a leap of faith and at worst a never ending headache of worry, maintenance, questions, hassle, demands and squabbling, just like renting property.

A motorhome will quickly become a personalised extension of your home; would you rent your house out to stranger? Do you want them sleeping in your bed?

I rented prior to purchase, the van was brand new and had already suffered dog's abuse, if they don't own it they won't respect it.

I would council against it.

However, if you are set on it a quick search through the various forums and a general googlefication will get you started on your due diligence. A call to several insurance companies would be helpful as well; I never got that far but I would guess its not cheap.

Just my tuppence worth.

Basically the OP, is setting up a motor home rental business. Insurance will be the key , and the risks the OP is willing to take re damage to vehicle.

If “renting” ( lending) to family and friends, whose to know if money changes hands. If to strangers then a different ball game.
