Struggled to get tyres up here, as seems to be a shortage of all season 120 rated van tyres.

Went to Asdatyres, got Continental Vanco Fourseason fitted, good price, as local garage quoted £20 per tyre more (if they had them) should be okay BUT

when I looked at them the dates are 0121, can't do much about it now as wife drove down into Inverness to get them fitted (26m drive home) she doesn't understand date system of tyres.

Tyre industry considers tyres new up to 2 years old.
Our Toyo's were 9 months old fine for us they will be worn out in 3 to 4 years, probably change the van before then.

I wouldn’t worry about it.
a 2021 tyre in 2021 is not a concern! It’s not a prawn sandwich!
I asled my garage about tyre ages when i was in getting my cam belt changed.
he said they wouldn’t fit new tyres that were >5yr old but they were OK if fitted, up to 10 yr old

That’s not too bad, seen much worse

When you are retired, and only average 2000 miles a year, the ”newer“ the tyre the better. The RAC recovery refused to go the the nearest tyre supplier and bought me a tyre that was 18 months old from their preferred supplier. We argued until they gave up.

Do many more miles now I am retired,,got time for much longer holidays/trips.BUSBY.

But when you are retired you normally do more miles in the Motorhome, well we do. A single trip for us is often 3500 miles.:xsmile:

I had 4x BF Goodrich fitted to our Campscout a couple of months ago. According to the date marks on the tyres they were manufactured the previous month.
The strong smell of tyre rubber is only now starting to fade.
One inconsequential reason for not having tyres "fresh off the press"

busby and Lenny HB Yes, should have said it was for the car, we have done more miles in the motorhome in the past year than in the car, and that’s not saying much😭
Same here with our car,,we never hardly use it..I let my neighbour use it for shopping and he uses it when we are away in the van.He does more miles than me..BUSBY.

Oh ok, I thought we had to have 'fresh' tyres. I've not bought any for the motorhome before. We use the van about every other weekend up here so doesn't sit on the drive too long.
But our Michelin Agilis were all cracked in the tread and starting to crack on the side walls too even though only half worn.

We've always worn out tyres on the mh, never got to age-related problems.

I had Bridgestone Duravis fitted at McConnechies in Perth. I asked for short date, and Ali came through with less than 6 months old, and high pressure valves to boot. Bit of a trek from Alness tho !!

Dont go to Lochty tyres A85 to Methven - they crushed my sills when jacking previous van

I fill my tyres with nitrogen. Last 25% longer on average as no oxygen.
O2 inside the tyre wants to equalise with o2 in atmosphere, passes through the tyre and oxidised the rubber. Perfect for vehicles standing around a lot. Pressures stay stable as well of course. Eddie Stobart and other big fleet operators eg bus companies been using for years, also F1 as gas inert in a crash. Costco only tyre firm I know that fill with Nitrogen as standard. If I sold tyres wouldn’t be too keen on prolonging their life!

Thanks for that Rozzer.
Been in the automotive industry all my life and didn’t know that. Knew that Helium eventually passes through all or most materials, but not oxygen.

There is no practical benefit from filling road tyres with nitrogen IMO…. It’s pure marketing guff.
the main (valid) reasons race cars use nitrogen is it is inert in a crash and it has no moisture in it, as variable humidity can affect pressures as the tyres in an unpredictable way as the tyre heats and cools..

Isn't helium getting scarce?
Helium, yes, Nitrogen less so, but do you really want four potential fire bombs on your motorhome, well five if you have a spare as well. ;)

I'm not sure on this theory that oxygen passes through the tyre at a greater rate than nitrogen. Sounds like bunkum to me but I stand ready to be corrected.
