Just had an email from Netflix to say that the basic plan currently £7.99 is being withdrawn and we have to change to the standard plan at £10.99 - the basic plan only recently went up to £7.99 Pure greed in our opinion and we will almost certainly being canceling the subscription

Good shout, I did notice that but it’s made us think a bit because we just don’t use it enough whichever plan so I think it’s time to unsubscribe

I subscribe for a month or two and binge on everything then cancel for 6+ months. Back when it was £7.99 when I first started it was worth it. But with all the streaming services now heading towards £12 a month each it is no longer viable to pay them all every
month.

On 3rd van so not a total newbie....
They imply the basic at £4.99 has replaced the standard, but has ads?
With the price of subscriptions increasing, it actually starts to make the bbc licence good value?

Always had Netflix on the standard plan so it can be viewed on two devices at the same time , daughter has her own TV .. and chips in .. .. still think it is GVFM

Also have Prime.. don't view it so often but worth it for free Amazon Prime deliveries..

TV catch-up channels, ITVX, iPlayer, Ch4 etc are also great and they get viewed more than live TV..

My daughter took out the cheaper with ad's plan a while ago.
She mainly watches in her bedroom and we have access to it on our main TV, the ad's so far have been very limited and short ( far far less than some youtube ones). I have noticed that if it's a popular new show or something you start binge watching then that's when the adverts kick in.
If you watching older content or swopping between shows there is sometimes none at all.

We don’t watch normal TV either but not sure how to go about not having the BBC licence
If you don't watch live television or use bbc iplayer then you don't need a license , just cancel it.

Subscribers  do not see these advertisements

The home page on the firestick gives you recommendations of what's trending on Netflix, prime etc. Then I just watch them on IPTV for free instead.

When don’t I need a TV Licence?
You don’t need a TV Licence if you never watch live on any channel, pay TV service or streaming service, or use BBC iPlayer*. This applies to watching on any device.

If you only do the following, you don’t need a licence:

  • Watch on demand or catch up programmes on services other than BBC iPlayer
  • Watch S4C programmes on demand
  • Stream, rent or buy movies from providers like Sky, Virgin Media, BT TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus or Now
  • Watch DVDs or Blu-rays,
  • Play videos clips through services like YouTube or to play video games.

Since 2008 & many years tugging
Netflix content has improved a lot where as Prime appears to have gone downhill. We mainly watch Netflix now, Lucky we can still piggyback onto our daughter's Thai account, we do get stitched up here she pays £3.75 a month for Premium, they reduced the price a few months ago.
We also have Disney + free with our bank account that's quite good.

and get Disney free
I would not do anything to support Disney including anything that resulted in a free account. Big boycott on my part.

I cancelled ours when they contracted Meagain and the ginger whinger
That was part of the reason I moved to just subscribing for one or two months a year. Not happy with giving them any money while some of goes to those two tossers. But hey ho. I wouldn't buy anything off anyone if I boycotted everyone I had an issue with.
