Next Friday (19th) I'm taking daughter and 2 granddaughters in the van to collect their new cockapoo puppy:) and wanted to find an overnight stop halfway, simples yes:) no:( both c&c and cc&c can't give me a booking if I plan to get there after 8, which I'll be doing as I can't leave IOW until 5 (with me so far :)). Having spent last half hour establishing that disappointing fact, I'm now starting the long haul to find a CL/CS on route that will be OK with me arriving 9ish and leaving at crack of dawn. If it was just me and daughter we'd just pull into a layby for a few hours but with grandchildren would prefer a site but may have to settle for a layby. Soooo, fellow funsters I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a safe stopover on route. My route will be M3,A34,M40,M42,M5,M6. Have to be in Nantwich by half nine on Sat morning so ideally want to drive 3/4 hours on Friday and stop overnight and set off early next day. Any suggestions will be very gratefully received.

Would you be able to reach C&MC site at Chapel Lane in your 4 hour timeframe?
There's normally availability there and I think they've got a late night arrivals area if pre-booked.

If you want to make is far as the Cannock area.

Wheatsheaf pub as mentioned just off jn 11 M6. Free to stay but i think they like you to have a meal.

Four ashes pub is similar and not far away on the A449, few mins from Jn12.

My local Hungry horse pub around the corner has mentioned they will let vans stay if we ask but never seen and vans there as yet. Wolverhampton rd, Cannock.

Penkridge. I have seen posts on here of people staying on a car park.

Old Mo's would have been a great stop but as you might know he's now moved. The Red lion farm is located in same village..

If you get real stuck I have a big drive and your welcome to pull on here, Downside is a busy main rd so can be a bit noisy but no worse than a layby. Plus, pub around the corner and also 2 x transport cafe's just down the road.

NOTE.... Be aware kids break up next Friday. That could make the roads even busier..

Pillaton Hall Farm near Penkridge, never been there just looking at map.

Nice place but not cheap and unsure if they would take late arrivals or a 1 night booking on a Friday. Wish I had my neighbours place.. Big patch of land and would make a great CL but he wont sell :(

I've done this journey dozens of times & its just a suggestion, I would do M27 M3 A34 M40 M42 M6, in my humble opinion you don't need to be anywhere near the M5.
This might save you time & mileage.

Robert.

Thanks for that. The reason we're going next Fri is that girls wanted to get puppy at start of school hols. They're so excited. It's going to be a bit of tiring time getting there but we're taking our time travelling back, hence taking the van.

Actually Junction 12 of the M6...
There is the Hollies and also the Truckers rest along same stretch (owned by my neighbour).
As you say busy and noisy. I live on same stretch of road.

Another option maybe.. Local CCC Staffs DA has a meet near Tamworth that weekend, so stay on M42. Overnight there and sort late arrival with stewards maybe.. Then straight down the A5 to join M6 next morning.

As I can't guarantee arriving by 8 they won't let me book. Apparently the late arrival area is only for those whose journey is delayed by things like serious road delays, both clubs have the same rule

Thanks for that idea Tonka. You might not remember us but you introduced us to Fun few years ago when we went to Welland steam rally. We were parked beside Ambilkate. So thanks for that, it's a great forum as this thread proves.

Why don't you tell them you'll be there before 8 and then call them around 7 to say you've been held up due to traffic, I'm sure they'll not google the traffic to see if your fibbing :)

More or less what I said but sadly I think they would check or it would be just my luck finding they did.

You little rascal Gerry, must admit though, that's what I'd do if I was in the OPs possition.
:pinocchio:

Can't remember who it was who stayed there but this was the one in Penkridge.

If that was me I’d just use a motorway service just get there when you can and leave any time you want ok might be a bit more than you want to pay but no time restrictions. Have spent many nights in services every thing you need is there better than a lay-by and safer

I stayed there a few years ago after asking if possible and put it to them about making it a camper stop and they didn’t seem keen so I stopped going there, they must have changed their mind. ? it is a good stop and you only hear the traffic in the morning rush hour.
Just had a look on park4night and see it’s on there, gets good reviews and the food is good.

Would not contemplate ever travelling in UK on motorways on a Friday. What difference would it make travelling up on Saturday? BUSBY.

Need to get there for 9.30 so not much choice but don't mind motorway driving in Van because we can pull into services and have a rest in comfort on the way to break up the journey that's why we're taking the van and not going by car and staying in a hotel overnight. A young puppy and two very excited grandchildren will cope much better in the van on a long journey.
