Not done it yet but reading a good bit about it. It's been featured in C&MH club mag and several Porsche mags recently. A guy from one of the car club forums I'm on is doing it at moment. A group is being arranged for next year on one of the forums as well. Think with all the interest in press and on line it's going to get a busy route!
Regards
Geoff

With the exception of the Pass o Cattle you'll be fine. Use the coast road instead.

It's absolutely terrible I'd discourage anyone from doing it.

At least till next year as I want it quiet when I do it in a few weeks

It's getting busier all the time. Current record for a car is sub 11 hours! Possibly least busy from mid-January to Easter but there is a high chance of snow in the North West then.

Did it three weeks ago went over Applecross Pass in a 7M van 30f van should not be a problem until you meet a car that does not know how to use passing places.

There is more than one road in Scotland, all with lovely scenery, and much quieter now all the unimaginative tourists are flocking to, and cluttering up, the NC500

I've been doing my own routes up north for years unfortunately the NC500 covers a portion of it where there's no other route bar that one. Someone needs to invent a new one south of the border somewhere.... That will make it quieter

Done the 500 many times over the last 30 years. It didn't have a touristy name then. Never had any problems in 8 metre vans but it's now attracting some very dodgy motorhome drivers so be wary.

You are indeed correct :) As a Scot who lived in Halkirk for 14 years the far north in my opinion has been spoilt by the N500. The boost to tourism is welcomed by the locals but it has just got too much. Best wait a bit till the hoards " have done it " Then experience the north of Scotland as it should be .

This is the perfect time of year to do it, i don't know where it is too busy. I was up the east side mid July early August and, yes, there were a lot of motorhomes but in the middle of summer you do expect it.

We done the west side two years ago, mid sept, and it was the best weather of the summer.

Enjoy

Talking to local traders when we did it motor clubs speeding through are ruining it and putting nothing into the local economy.

It's fairly quiet now as all kids back at school. I would only do the Belach an Bach from Applecross out as then all the main hairpins are down hill. Did it this time last year no problem except the poor visibility at the viewpoint due to the mist

my van is 7.3m and had no problems. did it at the beginning of June this year. the B869 Drunbeg Lochinver road is interesting in places :). did not do Applecross Pass , i know some folk do but i think there is a risk of grounding on the hairpins having along overhang. Also it was a lot quieter than i expected having read lots of reports. the only problem i encountered was the convoys of foreign vans who tailgate on single track roads.

Wise decision.

All of the rest of the route is easily doable but 'The Pass' is to be avoided in large/long vehicles.

Yes, others will claim that Council vehicles are able to negotiate the Pass but they have considerably more ground clearance!

We did the Applecross pass no problem in a 7.5m van... however, it was quiet at 10am. If it had been busier it probably would have caused problems at certain points, especially if wet at steep points requiring you to reverse!

There are videos on you tube of vehicles going over the pass. Watch these and make your own decision. We did it in a 6.7m coachbuilt with no problems.
It was a great experience and well worth it, but i wouldn't fancy reversing back down from the hairpins with a big overhang or a low chassis.
