The wife went into hospital a couple of weeks ago and after a week they decided that she had a gallstone. They tried to suck it out but were not able to so decided to put in a stent and as the doctor was on holiday for 2 weeks, invite her back for the operation. We are off to Spain for 6 weeks on the 24/7. The wife has benign MS which we do not cover as the wife takes a few meds but does not affect her on a day-to-day basis.
So calling up Nationwide to see what the options were i.e. she might get a flight to catch up with me or would they cover anything untoward happening in Spain if the operation did not go ahead, I was advised of the terms of the policy for numerous conditions:
"you decide that you still want to go on the journey, then you must call us, as this policy will not automatically cover claims that may arise directly from your newly diagnosed condition(s) whilst you are away.
When you call us, we will talk to you about your condition(s) and work out whether we can cover them for free, for an additional premium or if we can’t cover your conditions."

So after having already paid an additional amount for over 30 day cover the thieving scrotes want £124 to cover this issue (the MS "needs" to be covered as well).
I have told them where to stuff it that I would not be availing myself of their services for the time being but would like to garner any polite thoughts of fellow funsters who have the same insurance.
Not sure what would happen if we had to rock up to a hospital in France/Spain with just an EHIC.

£124 is quite cheap to cover you both for over 6wks... I think you’ll have trouble finding alternative cover ....
That is on top of the current account charge of £13pcm and the extra £30 for over 30 days.
Yes, having calmed down a bit I agree with you - just thought they would be helping me rather than me paying an additional amount. Oh well glad I wasn't too abrupt with them :)

I paid £305 which included trip extension to 90 days max, age extension and 2 minor notifiable medical conditions (asthma and eczema) which are easily controllable with medication.

The previous year I paid £201 but that didn't include the age extension which they brought in January 2019. Think the age extension is £60 but this is only charged for one person even though you may both be over the threshold age.

The fee covers multiple 90 day trips within the annual insurance period. I plan taking 3 trips during the period so not too bad overall IMO. Still feel I'm being ripped off though

Camdoon Make sure you tell them EVERYTHING. Every prescription for whatever and doctor specialist appointment for the last 12 months. Do not forget anything even things that are long term and you have told them about before.
They will void your policy for the slightest reason.
Might be best to send them a copy of your medical records

I have only ever made one travel insurance claim and that was with Nationwide and it was dealt with quickly and efficiently, but you do need to have your ducks in order....

You have to 'remember they are a business not a charity.?BUSBY.

It was perhaps my mindset. Consumer boffins are forever telling you to take out insurance when you book your holiday so that you get full cancellation benefit not waiting until you travel as you are as likely to have an issue beforehand as during your holiday. Being an annual policy, I thought that this would be covered and that they would say either if the operation goes ahead and your wife needs time to recover we will Ryanair her to Spain a week or two later or if the operation does not go ahead and she suffers a relapse/discomfort in Spain then ring us up and we will book her into a hospital there (EHIC one presumably which would suffice). The last thing I expected was to be asked to pay some more money. Having paid nothing in advance for the 6 weeks (exc Chunnel Frequent Traveller) I have no real cancellation claim and as we are tied to school holidays then - we are going :).

Think of it a different way if your m/h had an intermittant fault that might or might not need possibly very expensive repairs while you were abroad and you phoned up your breakdown cover to tell them what would there response be!!!!
