Good morning. I am thinking of changing my Lloyds Bank account to the Nationwide Flex.
Two questions regarding the travel insurance element.....
1. It says it’s possible, with a fee, to extend the 30 day trip. Does anybody know if you can extend to 90 days and the cost?

2. Has anyone made a claim on the travel insurance and if so what was your experience?

regards

Chris

I think there have been posts on here before about the experience of claims. One very unhappy as a previously prescribed med made the claim invalid others a good experience. We treat it as any other insurance easy to pay possibly harder to claim but we usually go for basic cover for everything and the travel cover (2 ski hols plus the MH) plus breakdown easily covers the cost.

I have extended my travel insurance to 120 day trips, with a couple of minor medical issues, statins and controlled blood pressure, cost this year was around £350 for the two of us.

We ve used this for the past few years. Its easy enough to extend you ring UK INsurance on 0800 0510154.

It does depend on your circs but last year 90 days incl one declarable pre exisitng condition was £90
And the Europe bit covered us for Morocco.

Thus far never had to claim ( fingeres crossed) so cant help with that sorry

Standard length is 31 days. maximum extension is to 180 days. I have 2 medical miseries and pay £12 to extend to 43 days. Quoted another £12 to extend to 50 days and another £26 to extend to 70 days. Darn't ask about the 180 days

Ouch is that the difference between starting with a 180 Gardner or a F10.

Could be, getting old you know!!

Tried getting separate cover for that length and most would not quote or came up with far higher quotes.

I have just extended my nationwide insurance to 62 days , if I wanted to include a chronic condition that wasn’t notifiable last year but is this year it was £220 extra but if I excluded that it was £72 .

A few points, with NW you have to pay a fee if you are over 70 where Lloyds covers you up to 80. NW requires you to declare all medical conditions where Lloyds has a huge exclusion list of conditions you don't need to declare. NW standard cover is 30 days, Lloyds 45 days but you can extend up to 120 days, however another Funster reported that Lloyds have wacked the charges right up for extending.

Lloyds suits us as we only go for 45 days and the boss being ex Lloyds we only pay 1/2 the monthly fee.
A friend had a head injury in Barbados and Lloyds were excellent.

Thanks this is really helpful.... am I also right in thinking you can withdraw cash abroad without fees?

Lloyds wanted £400 for 90 day extension.

I claimed on NW travel insurance, as with all claims it is always a clerical nightmare but if your ducks are in order, they got me paid out very promptly, i had no complaints

You can use the Nationwide debit card abroad without them charging any fees for cash withdrawal, BUT, I find it increasingly difficult to find an ATM, in the likes of France and Spain, that do not charge their own fees. The better ones are usually around 2 euros a time

Never found one that charges in France, every time it has happened in Spain I've found the bank next door is free, same in Portugal. I've never seen a charge when using a Revolut card perhaps it's because the card is loaded with Euro.

Not true Lenny HB I used my revolut card at a ATM in Benidorm and when it said charges of€240 I declined and went to the next one, same there so I declined again, then I was told of one that was free, but it wouldn’t let me withdraw because I had exceeded the daily limit even though I hadn’t withdrawn anything. When you decline, the bank still takes the money then returns it later, revolut was going to charge me until I explained what had happened.

The Nationwide Credit Card tied to the account "We do not charge transaction fees when you use your card to withdraw cash or make payments abroad." You can then credit the Credit Card account to ensure you do not pay interest.

The battery in my MH died and I couldn't get it unbolted, let alone out through my Aclass letterbox bonnet.

NW travel insurance got a mechanic to me within 45 mins on Sun afternoon and he spent close on an hour sorting it out and would have provided a new battery BUT I got one cheaper at Halfords, which he happily fitted

They don't charge but the local bank can & often does.

This is only available with Nationwide Flexplus account, the one that you pay £13 a month for.

With a 'standard' Flex account, Nationwide charge a percentage.

Another thing to consider if you ride/take motorbikes or scooters abroad is if there is a limit on engine size. I am led to believe that most travel insurance policies have a limit of 125cc. Lloyds Platinum account travel has no limit so I am covered even if I take my Goldwing which is 1800cc or MP3 scooter which is 500cc with us.

Don't forget, Nationwide do not cover miss-fueling…. :Eeek:
They do.. this is from their policy cover..

That's what the OP is asking about.

I take money out at cash machines - I also have a Santander 123 account so use theirs in Spain - never been charged. Is it like this country where machines outside banks tend to be free but those in tourist locations charge? Genuinely not aware of this.

That's what the OP is asking about.

There are three different Nationwide Flex accounts, only the Flexplus has included travel insurance and as the OP was asking specifically about the travel insurance I would have thought it a logical conclusion that he was enquiring about the Flexplus account.

Many banks in Spain now charge for cash withdrawals if not accepting their exchange rate, Santander in Spain do not do this for other Santander accounts but do for others.

The fee paying ones are different and operated by different companies, not banks as far as I know and not usually outside banks.

We were charged at a Sabadell ATM, outside the bank

Sabadell is a bank

ATMs
ATM banking

At Banco Sabadell we believe your bank should always be close by. That's why it has over 3,200 own ATMS and 14,500 belonging to other banks we have agreements with for you to enjoy the best conditions so that whenever you need one, there's one close by*.
