Swift Kontiki 1990

Hello
For the last 3 weeks there is this knocking sound.
Have been to two car shops now and they are just shaking their heads. Will enter on Monday again to take a deeper look.
The car is an older petrol 1990 Swift Kontiki (CiTROEN C25 SWIFT 640/6 I think it's the old Talbot Express), that I had for 5 years and it has gone well. Just changed clutch two years ago. I'm just driving it around Sweden in the summers no big trips.

The following has happened:

- Noises in the form of knocking sounds that increase when I drive faster (see video clips). If I press down clutch it ticks just a little but increases when I release the clutch. If I press down clutch and accelerate the engine sounds ok. Driving a maximum of 30km/h now as it is worrying. the sound comes from the center or the left side
- Car shop changed left drive knot 5 days ago as there was a crackling sound when I turned and accelerated at low speed. the crackling disappeared but the knocking sound remains.
- another workshop test drove the car without being able to say what it was.

This knocking sound have ben there for 3 weeks but today it gradually disappeared when I was out for an hour city driving.
Now the knocking is goon but if I press clutch down 50% the knocking sound is back...

Wondering if it has to do with gearbox or clutch, that maybe the clutch is broken or too little oil in the gearbox

Appreciate some tips and advice on this
Sincerely
His

I could not update my question but here is the clip sound when driving

I don't have any answers for you, but one question that is likely to arise is...

Can you feel the knocking through the steering wheel?

And another?

When you brake does it get worse?

Clutch release bearing nakkered ?
Thanks but I got a new clutch 2 years ago and have only driven 400km maybe since car is old only drive with kids in the summer. Do you think I can get the Clutch release bearing nakkered fixed on warranty?

From that video it sounds like the speed of the knocking varies with the speed you are going rather than the number of RPM your engine is doing?

NO I cannot not no vibrations at all. I know what you mean

sounds like it could be clutch release bearing

new clucth ok, are you sure they changed the release bearing at the same time? they should but!!!

Your link to the sound file still isn't working

Ignore that, it is now.

Certainly sounds like clutch as the sound varies with revs, not speed.
Failing that, possibly a belt driven item.... Alternator, water pump failing....or even the belt itself if its starting to shed apart and hitting something.

i take it back, that is as Gromett has said speed related, so something that is turning when you are moving.

is there any noise when stationary with clutch depressed or not.

Engine thrust bearing? What mileage have you?

When i'm stationary there is no noise with clutch depressed or not.

then it is almost certain it is drive train related.

start checking universal joints, CVs, discs, calipers. anything that rotates or is close to a rotating part.

Is it rear wheel drive? if so propshaft bearing.

To me it sounds as though it's after the final drive, more related to wheel speed. CV joint or similar.

I agree it's drive train - too slow to be engine. Is it still there if you coast the van in Neutral? Does it change power on / power off? A stab in the dark (because more testing is needed) is centre bearing OS drive shaft loose or damaged.

Sorry no sound but start at the rear wheels, jack up and rotate for wheel bearing noise and excess play, then the prop shaft for wear in the Universal joints then you are up to the gearbox, first thought would be thrust bearings but as I said no sound so just applying logic

I am not a mechanic. But it sounds like it could be something mechanical in the wheel area.
I had a similar(ish) noise from a bent plate that goes around the brake disk. Not sure what it is called, but I got a stone trapped in it once which forced the place out and it caught on something once each wheel revolution. The variation with clutch says maybe not though?

The fact that the position of the clutch pedal & therefore the clutch itself changes the noise, could indicate a nakkered clutch release bearing, these can fail at anytime, your hammering noise may not be that but it's a possibilty.

Looked back at a video I took of the sound my van made with the bent plate and it was more a scuffing sound than a banging.

On the passenger side drive shaft there is a support bearing .When that goes it makes a similar noise?

I was going to say, driveshaft balancer, either loose or lost. The longer driveshaft has a balancer weight, if that’s gone or loose, as you increase the speed of transmission, knocks out of balance( hammer knock). Especially at the transition of rpm at the wheels; When slowing down or accelerating, the knocks become louder.

If it's an old vehicle that stands still a lot, could be the tyres have slight flat spots which can cause noise and wheel balance problems.
