Just for info I looked at a Hydratrail Easy Lifter a couple of years ago. From my investigations it may not be legal for road use as it is not articulated and therefore it is not technically classed as a trailer, and as such all wheels would need to be bracked. This info came from the Department of Transport. I did check at the time with the maker of the Hydratrail and he was very non committal about the matter. I ended up buying a trailer for my scooter.

Im pretty sure its not illegal, they just cant decide whether its a trailer or not so there are implications with things like speed limits, vehicle weights and motorway regulations etc

Just a tad..
This whole area, as with towing a TOAD, has a ‘greyness’ around it. As far as I was concerned and with a pragmatism I’m not often associated with, it looks enough like a trailer and or rack with wheels, to not alarm anyone.

Proving or disproving the legality at the roadside and or in the event of an incident, is indeed a very different proposition and probably very challenging, time consuming and fraught with differing views based on interpretation.

There are a lot of them out there and at least 2 french manufactured variants. The a frame debate is a different issue Imo

I did look at the French version and from what I remember about them they were slightly different. I think these were articulated, attached to a tow ball, and when reversing you attached a bar to lock the unit which then allowed the wheels to act like casters. Also from what I remember they were twice the price of the Hydratrail.

I had mine for two years. Covered approx 10k miles. Never stopped by police. Even had two Spanish police motorcyclists help me when I had a puncture.
On ferries I added it to the length of the van. Used Euro Tunnel approx 6 times, again, never stopped or questioned.
Re speed limits, my van is 4500kgs and kept to the appropriate speed limits.
The only time I treated it as a trailer was to stay out of third lane on the motorway.
Lastly, the Xmax is a great scooter, loads of storage which has not altered on the three wheel version.

My last Burstner Elegance MP3
Fitted nice & neatly
Deck chairs etc on rear shelf and lots of room between the floors,
Bought a new Elegance now with a 300cc Vespa and like it better as lots more room in garage and dead easy to get in & out & Vespa 100kg lighter than MP3
