not long enough
so one more night to go, managed not to pay for a single aire, 9 so far, some site nights paid for though

one more night, have not had moules yet, any recommendations of place to get some between Rouen and Calais and better still if next to a free aire

might pay for the aire provided it doesn't involve use of CC of tokens, failed both times trying that

any ideas?

We are , tonight, in Pierrefond, the home of the famous Chateau, as seen in ' Merlins'. Only 9 miles from Compeigne, where the 'armistice was signed, in a railway carriage 96 years ago today.

Staying in a car park on the edge of the small lake, with a great seafood restaurant only 100m away.

Enjoy it while you can as more and more are now payant. I guess the commune has to find money in the recession . But really still very cheap compared to the UK ! Just back from a month there and am afraid to add up my camp site fees !!

Wissant - 30 minutes drive from Calais Port, two brasseries a short walk from the aire doing Moules Frites for 10 Euros. They're just downhill from the central crossroads in the village. Yum.

But that is the idea ! Towns and villages provide you with free stop and in return you spend in the local commerce !!

True but average your spending in the towns you stopped by the number of free nights !! Plus bet if you paid for a site in the UK you would still spend something there :-)

We really do try to use the towns, particularly those with free aires, but the French don't half eat late (y)

Not as late as the Spanish !! The majority of French eat their main meal at lunchtime and it is the best time to get a good value meal . Normally they eat at night if on holiday and been travelling or for a special occasion .

A bottle of vin rouge, bit of accordian musique on the hi-fi and someone urinating in the road outside and you wouldn't be far off the real thing surely?

1994 and beyond...
last time we were in Le Crotoy we had Moules twice in different restaurants over 2 nights...they were the tiniestmost miserable little things we have even been served up...Belgium far more reliable for Moules IMO
