This is prompted by a thread talking of DIY wiring of a side camera using relays. I didn't want to hijack that one with this question so I thought I would start this one.

I've done plenty of DIY jobs of a similar nature on my van. Every year though I hesitate over the question on the insurance proposal that asks. "Has the vehicle being modified in anyway?" I've generally answered no even though that over the years that there is a list as long as my arm, most electrical. What do others do?

It’s a judgement call; low value, low importance mod’s I probably wouldn’t mention but higher value or more important (gas, electrical, running gear, satellite, solar, etc) mod’s I’d mention.

I was more worried about insurance being voided by non declaration.

I always say that the running gear and engine have not been modified but some habitation parts have been
They don't seem to be interested in the hab stuff.

NFU mutual told me that theyre only interested in knowing about things that might affect the vehicles performance and stability, most other things count as accessorising

Thanks for that, from now on I will answer "nothing that might affect the vehicles performance and stability", Given though insurance companies propensity for searching for get out clauses I wonder that in the case of a fire claim they would look at the DAY installations of inverters, solars, extra plugs, relays, LED tape installations etc.

The agent fills in the forms here. In the event of a claim all the different ones I have used have stated the same; leave the form filling & what to put on it up to us.

I was once turned down by SAGA who wouldn't insure our 'van because it had a Solar Panel on the roof???

I tried to understand the refusal but I was talking to someone who regarded a Motorhome as a foreign concept.

We were told by insurance ( c&mhclub) that the added alarm was a modification to the vehicle but the solar panel used to charge the batteries to keep the alarm active etc was an accessory and as under £500 was already covered!.

and we got £12 rebate for the alarm ( about 6 months into the policy) .
