Millau bridge… over or under it?

You can follow the D907 most of the way up the Gorges du Tarn. There's cheap riverside sites all the way up through. On the lower ones below Le Cresse you can watch the Griffin Vultures coming in to roost in evening.
Mike.
I'll second that. Years ago there was a campsite with the plushest marble faced toilet block I've ever been in. It was an ASCI cheap site right on the riverside. We then followed the Tarn for a while. Did that a few years running.

Done both but we used to always stop in that area for a while anyway as its well worth exploring. Tarn Gorges one way and some fantastic Kayaking and places to stay the other way. One of our favourite wild camping spots by the Tarn is not far from there. Lac de Pareloup is fantastic also if your into Kayaking, sailing etc.
Don't forget the white water course at Millau, that's good for a couple of hours of fun in the sun.
Mike.

It's near the floating Bridge. Follow the signs for the sports centre of the roundabout heading south out of town, or Google it. It's about €8 for the afternoon, pay and play.

Is there a toll to go over the Millau Bridge? I know the autoroute is free down there.

I have sailed under it in a canoe. Honestly, some of the things my wife has made me do. It nearly ruined my back for life but great view!

If you're just going one way, there's no doubt in my mind.

Go over it, going south.

The views are stunning and the experience is well worth the toll fee.

If you can also do the return journey, go under.

Enjoy..

Yes class 2 is about €16

Went over it 1 week ago, cost was 16,90 if I remember correctly

There is a parking area right by the Aire that can be accessed by normal roads. Its then easy to walk to the viewpoint in the Aire without paying the toll. I agree, you need to see from above and below.

Have also done both and gone back to Millau a couple of times, note to those with height issues, it is not at all scary.
We went under, to avoid the terror, so I'm keen to understand (i.e. be convinced 'cos I'm terrified) why it's not scary ....

I think our 5500 tag axle falls within class 4 tolls, about 47 euros:( but some years ago we only got charged class 2, about 13 euros even though it was 5300kg and over 3m high. Have been over it in both directions when it was cheap but now go through Millau to avoid the tolls but do wonder about the 3.5 ton weight limit signs in the town.

I always enjoy the drive down the A75, going both over and through Millau, sometimes staying over. Millau to me is the start of Southern France where roof tiles are red and you can smell the dry warmth.

I love going over the Millau Bridge especially on a Motorcycle , but Millau town is a delightful place to stop too. had one passenger once who refused to go over Millau as they have an acute fear of heights so had to go down the valley for them ...

It’s a beautiful piece of architecture and engineering. They had to invent machinery in order to deliver the vision.

Just as well.

If it was a French architect it wouldn’t still be there.
It may be a painful truth, but the French do know how to knock up a Leviathan out of steel. Le Eiffel tower ?? Twice the height of Blackpool tower a later and shallow copy. Canal Locks, a French invention, plenty more examples as well.

Not too obvious from the photos but the sides are built in such a way that your scary 'oh my God look at that drop' is obscured. I find staring ahead, probably best when driving is a big help too.

The safety aspect never even occurs to me, it's only the same as any other bridge I suppose 🤔

It never seems that impressive going north apart from the extensive view. There was an interesting TV programme some years back about the actual construction. Incredible engineering.

That will wind Chris up. 🤣
