Looking to take the MH to Poland to visit son's girlfriends parents next month - 2-3 week trip

Thinking of using Tunnel but any other routes?

Would appreciate advice as to tolls, stopovers, Winter tyres needed?

Thanks

Is it worth using a crossing that can be transferred in case of a lockdown, like hook of Holland instead of France ?

Hi thanks
I would only book anything last minute at the mo (y)

Antwer, Dortmund,Kassel, Dresden, Wroclaw.

Tolls on A4 in Poland only, about £5 each way.

City Pass for Germany only if your going into a City, Traffic at Kennedy Tunnel, Antwerp and Essen.

keep an eye here https://www.gov.pl/web/coronavirus/travel as they seem to change their minds a lot I’m told.

Too early for winter tyres, more free places to stop on route than you could throw a stick at, if your taking a dog DO NOT tie it up outside overnight in Germany.

Alternative route via Cologne, is more likely to have traffic.

We do the trip from Katowice(SE of Wroklaw) - Dunkirk annually, except this year.

No winter tyres necessary unless you want to go S. to visit Tatra Mts.

Tolls only start after Wroclaw

Route is all M/way Ghent-Antwerp-Essen-Dortmund-Kassel-Leipzig-Dresden-Bautzen-Goerlitz-Wroclaw. All M/Way. Don't worry that Essen/Dortmund is Emissions zone and one goes straight through town(dual carriageway with t/lights) as this road (A40) is exempt.

Antwerp ring road can be a pain for traffic especially at rush hour. Dresden can be slow at rush hour.

If you have park4night and other apps there are plenty of parking places near the route, depending on how far you want to drive.

I inserted Bautzen in there because there is a convenient Stellplatz there and it is a very picturesque medieval town on a river. Directions to Stellplatz - Exit at Bautzen West, T-junction turn rt, 1st t/light left, 1/2 km on left big CP and 4 MH places are near to road, with some EHU. Don't worry if MH places are full because one can take double through car space, after office workers gone home.

Excellent restaurant in centre. To walk there go down and up steep pedesrtrian streets via river(very scenic) or cross on flat high-level road bridge.

Restaurant "Culinarium" , Grosse Budergasse 10. Tel for booking 0049 (0) 3591 2704949

Little story: I congratulated the Front-of-house lady and said 'You should keep the chef - her reply 'I will, he is my husband'

Enloy the trip.

Geoff

We use the Stena Line Harwich/Hook of Holland route.

It means you can leave work at a normal time, drive to Harwich, and get on the night boat at 10pm
Wake up at 7am next morning in Hook of Holland (Rotterdam)
Dortmund is 2.5hrs down the road for a late breakfast.

Dortmund-Kassel-Leipzig-Dresden-Bautzen-Goerlitz-Wroclaw
Bautzen is about 1,000km from Calais, and 840km from Hook of Holland so about 2 hours closer

Thanks all for the help - I will follow the travel directions suggested(y)

Looking at the options of getting to Europe the ferry from Harwich and Dover Dunkirk look fine but the Tunnel is cheaper and faster than both for the dates I looked at.

The advantage of the Tunnel over the ferries apart from speed is the boarding/unloading - less fuss and hanging about and flexibility - if you turn up a bit early they will often put you on the first train available.

Been on 8 ferries this year and always spend so much time, waiting to load/unload............

Thanks again folks(y)

That is not waitng time - get up early at nightstop, drive to ferry queue, breakast and associated chores, sea-air walk, check few Aires for first days and ready to board. Tunnel-Dunkirk is about 30km.
